Vicki Medina, Antelope Valley Board of Trade executive director, joined the Air Force Materiel Command Community Liaison Program in 2013.

As a liaison, she meets with the 412th Test Wing commander on a quarterly basis and attends various base functions. When possible, liaisons are invited to meet with AFMC command staff at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

During those times, Air Force representatives and community liaisons are able to exchange information to stay informed about each respective entity. Medina is able to take what she learns to the AVBOT board of directors, Aerospace Committee and other members. This is accomplished through emails, social media and the “Business News” monthly newsletter.

“I am honored to represent Edwards AFB as a CLP,” said Medina. “We exchange information and ideas vital to the mission. I have attended multiple briefings as well as attending the National Security Forum at Maxwell AFB, Ala., learning about the mission of AFMC as well as the U.S. Air Force.”

In return, the 412th TW commander has an open invitation to brief during the annual AVBOT Business Outlook Conference, which brings in an upwards of 800 business and civic leaders together at once.

“When the AV Board of Trade travels to Sacramento and Washington, D.C., annually with white papers in hand, the number one item is protecting the R2508 [restricted airspace] from encroachment and the base from a round of BRAC,” said Medina.

“We value our largest employer and remind our members of the importance of having Edwards in our backyard. I feel that I am another ambassador for the base and its mission.”

Medina has volunteered for numerous community service organizations since she moved to the Antelope Valley. This includes the Desert Haven Enterprises, Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Boosters, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the American Cancer Society. Currently, she serves as a trustee on the Lancaster District Cemetery Board and as an advisory board member for the AV Integrated Regional Water Management Plan. She is also a member of Toastmasters in addition to serving as a community liaison for Edwards AFB.
