On April 17, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base honored victims of the Holocaust.
Through the stories of five Holocaust survivors and a Holocaust historian, our community gained a rare glimpse into the lives of those tormented by the horrors of the era. The Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Day of Remembrance was a chance to honor those lost and to pay our respects to those who live on to share their memories.
The Day of Remembrance will began the morning of April 17 at five locations across the installation. Five Holocaust survivors met with base personnel, shared their stories, and answered questions. The Day of Remembrance events finished with a Candlelight Vigil at the Hope Chapel.
This year’s event specifically observed stories of rescue behind the Holocaust. Brave men and women made the choice to take action to rescue victims regardless of the risks. This year, we are challenged to remember the importance of freedom, treating others with decency, and taking a stand against hate.
The Day of Remembrance was an incredible opportunity for military personnel to interact with those impacted by these influential events. It was a chance for education and insight – and most importantly, it was a significant reminder of why liberty and equality are forefront in our commitment to national service.
