Heroes Day for Open House a success

David S. Ricker
Staff Writer

More than 500 local people with disabilities or special needs were on the flight line April 13, the day before the Thunder and Lightning Over Arizona 2012 Open House to watch the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and other performers practice their routines.

Heroes Day was organized by the base to accommodate representatives of the local community who would enjoy the open house demonstrations, but might not be physically able to deal with extensive walking and large crowds.

“This event is an extension of what our uniform represents; unity and helping people. ‘Heroes day’ is our way of giving back to special-needs individuals and their families who may not have been able to come out over the weekend,” said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Cooper.
