Desert Lightning Team first sergeants held the 2012 Annual First Sergeantsâ€™ Steak Sale at Bama Park May 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The fundraiser provided Airmen with a dinner plate consisting of a steak, a loaded baked potato, coleslaw, a dinner roll and a drink for $10.
The profits from the sale help support all the First Sergeants programs such as Operation Warmheart, a program managed by the First Sergeants Council geared toward helping and supporting Airmen and their families during any time of need, and other funds as well as events first sergeants put on such as the Annual Awards Ceremony.
â€œAll proceeds go to Operation Warmheart that directly helps any Airmen that is in need,â€ said Senior Master Sgt. Hector Herrera, 355th Component Maintenance Squadron First Sergeant. â€œThere is a criteria for use of the Air Force Assistance Fund and Falcon Loan, there is a lot more flexibility in Operation Warmheart to help out Airmen.â€
Events like these are important throughout the Air Force because it takes care of the Airmen and their families when something goes wrong and places a financial burden on them.
â€œThe food was delicious and moral events like this are good for the base, it is always good to get out of work and enjoy days like this,â€ said Tech Sgt. Beth Chambless, 355th Communications Squadron alternate base communications security manager.
D-M first sergeants do this every year, Herrera said. Our steak sale is absolutely the best, we are able to work with agencies downtown that gives us great deals so that we can past that on to our Airmen.
More than 500 Airmen participated in the event.
â€œMy favorite part is getting out from behind my desk and interacting with all our Airmen here at D-M who are doing such amazing things,â€ said Master Sgt. George Poppe, 355th Communications Squadron First Sergeant. â€œAt the end of the day when Airmen come up to you and say thank you, thatâ€™s what it is all about.â€
