More than 40 Desert Lightning Team members gathered at the golf course track to participate in the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month amazing race May 11.
The race was 1.5 miles long and was entered by two-person teams. Each team had to visit the seven stations set up along the track, where they were presented with a cultural challenge from seven Asian-Pacific countries.
To win the challenge teams had to be the first to receive a stamp of completion from each station.
“Teams were given a map, a game sheet and a card, and they could go to any booth in any order to win the race,†said 2nd Lt. Liezl-Anne Sarte, 612th Air Communications Squadron officer-in-charge of the Combined Air and Space Operations Center systems and APAHM committee member.
Activities included a bean bag juggling contest, called Otedama, from Japan and Guam’s Huega, which is throwing a washer into a coconut from five feet away.
“The amazing race was a great opportunity to get outside and learn about other cultures while getting a good workout,†said Airman 1st Class Alyssa Combs, 355th Legal Office paralegal and member of the winning female team. “Our team will definitely be back next year!â€
Members of the APAHM committee were on hand at every booth to explain the challenges, give out penalties and ensure task completion.
“We wanted to have a spin on the usual 5k ran during most heritage celebrations,†Sarte said. “The committee decided the most creative and fun way to do this was to emulate the Amazing Race and set up a cultural challenge at each point.â€
Awards were given out for first place female team, first place male team and best-dressed team.
“The Amazing Race was a great way to spread awareness about Asian Pacific cultural diversity while getting some good PT in,†Sarte said.
