The First Place Award winning boat, Panda X-Press, starts its journey across the pool.

The 101 Critical Days of Summer Program at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base got off to a warm, but wet start with the 2012 version of the Annual Build-A-Boat competition at the outdoor recreation pool.

The rules for the competition called for teams consisting of four members to include a skipper, first mate and two deck hands.

The teams were provided cardboard, one roll of duct tape, two box cutters and two markers. Using those materials the team members constructed craft that were required to resemble a boat with sides that were at least 12 inches tall. Each boat was required to be named, to have a theme and the teams were required to participate in costume.

The teams were given an hour to design and construct their boats and hope that they were seaworthy or at least in this case, pool-worthy. That’s because the boats were placed, two at a time, into the pool with one member of the team inside with a paddle. They were required to paddle the length of the pool, get out and allow a second member of the team to get into the boat and paddle to back to the starting point. The trips back and forth were timed with the fastest boat declared the winner.

The award winner were:

First Place Award was given to the Gang Plankers with a time of 1:56.

Second Place Award was given to the Poon Hammers with a time of 2:01.

Third Place Award was given to The Smokers with a time of 2:25.

Fastest to Sink Award was given to The Boatswains (from the U.S. Naval Reserve Center) with a time of 32 seconds.

Best Costume Award was given to Personnel List.
