The American Red Cross offers swimming lessons for children at the outdoor recreation pool for the summer months of 2012.

Before attending a swim lesson, parents are encouraged to attend an aquatics orientation and swim lessons informational meeting. The orientation will help parents get the answers to their questions about registration as well as general information about pools and swimming lessons.

Registration for swimming lessons will be held at the outdoor recreational pool and payments are due on the first day of class. There will be three different times for classes each day, 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Courses will be from Tuesday through Saturday for a two-week period.

Classes have been re-evaluated for younger kids to fit their ability and their attention span. Children 5 and younger will have 30-minute classes and children 6 and older will have 45-minute classes.

The American Red Cross offers six different course levels that teach children how to swim skillfully and safely. The levels are determined by age.

Parent and Child Aquatics are for children 3 and younger and parents are required to be in the pool with the child. There are two levels of classes for this group. Preschool Aquatics are for children ages 4 and 5, and has three class levels. Learn-to-Swim is for children 6 and older, it has six different levels. Each level includes training in basic water safety and helping a swimmer in distress.

“Each Parent and Child Aquatics and Preschool Aquatics class will have a minimum of two students and a maximum of six to make sure every child will get one-on-one training as needed,” said Jenny States, Outdoor Recreation aquatic supervisor. “Learn-to-Swim has a maximum of eight to 12 depending on the level the child is in.”

The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program is a nationally recognized program. Every Water Safety Instructor is certified by the Red Cross and Tucson.

All slots are on a first come first served basis, so get your child enrolled now for a safer swimmer this summer.
