If you are retired and elected for the Survivor Benefit Plan for your spouse and/or children, when can you make changes to your plan? Any time you have a change in life circumstances; loss of spouse due to death or divorce, remarriage, acquiring a dependent child; you will need to update your SBP election. If you lose your spouse due to divorce or death, you can suspend your SBP election for spouse. If you later remarry, you can add your new spouse to the plan. However, they will not be eligible for SBP until the 13th month of the remarriage. You must provide copies of divorce decrees and marriage certificates to make these changes. If you acquire additional dependent children (through birth, adoption or foster care), you’ll need to submit photo copies of their birth certificates, adoption paperwork or foster parent documentation.
