Airmen learn swing dance at The Loft

Airman 1st Class Christine Griffiths
355th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

Looking for something fun to do? Why not try out some swing dancing classes Thursday evenings from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Loft.

The class is led by Airman 1st Class David Brogdon. He’s been teaching swing dancing for about four months.

“I learned how to swing dance six and a half years ago in Farmington, Michigan,” Brogdon said. “I visited my mom, and I didn’t have any friends where she lived. So, I hung out with my sister and her friend a lot of the time. Her friend would go downtown to dance. She brought my sister and me along with her one night. I would sit there and socialize with people, but would never dance. But eventually, it went from socializing to learning how to dance. It all started because my friend Megan introducing me to dancing.”

The swing dance class he leads is free to anyone on base.

“Right now it’s pretty small because not many people know about it. So, maybe like 15-20 people come,” Brogdon said.

Each class runs about two and a half hours long. The first hour consists of teaching the different moves, and the second half is learning on your own.

“It’s mainly swing dancing, but then a lot of people break off into country. So, I’ll teach them how to line dance,” Brogdon said. “Usually by the end of the class, people are doing some line dancing which also leads into rap and hip-hop.”

If you have any questions, please call Airman Brogdon at 254-295-7129.
