Apply before Sept. 30 for tuition assistance

Staff Sgt. Candice C. Page
Headquarters Air Combat Command Public Affairs

LANGLEY AFB, Va – Airmen across Air Combat Command can now apply for Military Tuition Assistance for classes beginning on or before Sept. 30, 2013. For college courses beginning in October, service members must wait for approvals of the MilTA program, which are under review at the DoD level.

Currently, there is no estimated time on when new MilTA guidance will be available, possibly delaying approval of tuition assistance.

“Airmen should get on board and get their education done, because you never know when the benefits will not be available,” said Staff Sgt. Amanda L. Depasquale, 23rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron dental assistant at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. She continues to take full advantage of continued education benefits.

Bertram Hardnett, 633rd Force Support Squadron chief of education and training services here, encourages Airmen to not make any financial decisions or course commitments without an approved MilTA form after October.

“Once we receive any updates on the MilTA guidance for fiscal year 2014 we will be sure to put the information out right way to all public affairs offices and all unit first sergeants,” said Hardnett.

Although MilTA guidance has not been approved, Airmen and base education center personnel are encouraging military members to take advantage of all education benefits that are offered. Free CLEP/DANTES testing and the Montgomery GI Bill benefits are available and will be unaffected by fiscal year 2014 changes.
“When you have someone willing to pay for your education, why not take advantage of it?” said Hardnett.
