Tech Sgt. Ken Meyers, 354th Aircraft Maintenance Unit Aircraft personnel group assistant section chief, is coordinating a ruck march in honor of Special Agent David Wieger Nov. 2, 8 a.m. at Tumamoc Hill.

Special Agent David Wieger was killed when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device November 1, 2007, in the vicinity of Balad Air Base, Iraq. SA Wieger was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Force Commendation Medal (2nd Oak leaf cluster) and the Air Force Combat Action Medal.

Wieger was a Technical Services Agent at Air Force Office of Special Investigations Detachment 303, Travis Air Force Base, Calif. During his time there he and Meyers became friends.

“Wieger was a dear friend to me,” said Meyers. “He was an Airman, a warrior and he did a lot for his country. That’s why I wanted to start an annual ruck march in his honor.”

Participants will go up the hill, place an American flag at a memorial at the top, and come back down. The entire march will cover five and a half miles.

“My goal is to turn this event into an annual one, that continues to grow and eventually becomes too big for just me to organize,” Meyer said.

Meyer is asking that all participants to donate $15 in which all the proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.  For more information contact Meyers at 228-3828.
