162nd Fighter Wing unit members and family take part in the first ever 5K and Family Fun Run.

At the first ever 5k and Family Fun Run held here Sept. 28, runners sped by F-16s on their way to the finish line.

More than 45 participants turned out for the event sponsored by the Top 3 and Family Appreciation Day Committee. After 6 months of planning, $200 was raised to support the FAD.

Runners took their marks at the dining facility and continued onto the flight line.

“I had been out there before, but it was a whole different experience, it felt like you were alone next to the airplanes.” said Staff Sgt. Amanda Gast, a Weather Forecaster at the 214th Reconnaissance Group. “What an amazing feeling that our guard base has so many amazing aircrafts. It gave me a new perspective of what the 162nd is all about.”

Senior Master Sgt. William McManus, a Weather Forecaster at the 214th Reconnaissance Group, said he liked the idea of running by the planes. He recalled his 16 years working here, “It brought back memories, its been years since I’ve been back there.”

Member of the Top 3 board and event organizer, Master Sgt. Amie Neighbors said participants enjoyed running on the flight line and wants to hold regular running events on base. As a Physical Training Leader, she said a lot of people do poorly on the run and tell her they hate to run.

“I used to not be a runner, I hated to run and what motivated me was to sign up for little races,” said Neighbors, now a marathon runner. “Once you get the bug and your competitive side kicks in, you are motivated and it will help people improve their run.”

Members that weren’t able to participate in this event should begin training for spring. Neighbors said, plans for the spring include a post run breakfast and vendor fair.
