VA, City of Tucson to hold Four Chaplains Memorial

The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) is pleased to announce that they will again be participating in the City of Tucson, Veterans’ Affairs Committee (VAC) annual Four Chaplains Memorial Service, Scheduled for Sunday – February 2 at 1 p.m., at the Kino Veterans Memorial Park, 2805 E. Ajo Way.  This park is located across from the Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.

This memorial service honors four courageous World War II Chaplains; Lt. Clark Poling – Dutch Reformed Clergyman, Lt. Alexander David Good- Rabbi, Lt. George Lansing Fox- Methodist Clergyman, and Lt. John Washington – Catholic Priest.  On February 3, 1943 their transport ship the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, was torpedoed by the German submarine U-223.  These gallant men gave out all the life jackets and helped the troops off the ship into life rafts.  They gave up their own life jackets giving their lives that others might live.

This memorial service is to commemorate this act of heroism by these men of faith from different and diverse religious denominations, joined together in their gallantry to save others.

Veterans’ service organizations are invited and encouraged to participate in the Massing of the Colors with their respective color/honor guards, and also to lay a wreath for their organizations honoring the four chaplains.

Jonathan Rothschild the Mayor for the City of Tucson will be participating, as well as other numerous local dignitaries in this solemn memorial service.

Those SAVAHCS employees participating in this service will be: Dr. Martin Dresner, Master of Ceremonies and Chaplain John Zinck, Coordinator of Pastoral Care for the Medical Center.

The entire Tucson Community is cordially invited to attend this free program honoring these brave men.
