Air Land Sea Application Center (ALSA) visits D-M

The Air Land Sea Application (ALSA) Center, located at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA visited Davis-Monthan AFB and Fort Huachuca on March 11 and 12. ALSA may be an organization only some recognize by name, but for whom many can be thankful for the products of their labor. As the Joint Staff J7 produces joint publications for the operational and strategic community, ALSA is the lead organization that provides multi-Service tactics, techniques, and procedures (MTTP) or joint doctrine at the “tactical” level. For Lt. Col. Joel Eppley, it was a unique opportunity to work on a joint staff and remain close to the tactical warfighter.

ALSA is recognized not only in the US military, but also among allies as one of the lead organizations in the development of tactical level and multi-Service TTPs. ALSA’s mission is to rapidly and responsively develop MTTP publications and solutions across the spectrum of military operations to meet the immediate needs of the warfighter. Some of ALSA’s key publications are Joint Application of Firepower (JFIRE), Cordon and Search, Survival, Tactical Convoy Operations and Advising – all of which have been used by soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coalition forces who have deployed to support numerous operations and exercises.

While at D-M and Fort Huachuca, Lt. Col. Eppley met with subject matter experts from the Army and Air Force. These meetings focused on a few new MTTPs in development, such as Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Optimization and Operations Assessment. ALSA’s upcoming revisions of JFIRE, the Joint Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (JSEAD), and Defense Support of Civil Affairs (DSCA) were also discussed.

ALSA’s publications are available to the entire military community and warfighters are invited to access the ALSA website at www.alsa.mil. They welcome any comments and recommendations for future MTTP which may fill a gap at the tactical level in conducting joint tactical operations. You may also sign up on their website to receive ALSA’s quarterly update that provides links to the latest publications and articles focused on the joint warfighter.
