May 1 is Law Day.

This annual event was originally conceived in 1957 as a testament to our nation’s commitment to the rule of law. President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the inaugural Law Day the following year, and Congress followed suit in 1961, with a joint resolution designating Law Day as an annual celebration.

With that in mind, the Edwards Legal Assistance Team wants to remind readers that all current service members, retirees and dependents possessing military ID cards are eligible for free legal assistance at the Base Legal Office.

Services available include wills, powers of attorney, notaries, advance medical directives and advice on most areas of civil law, including consumer and landlord tenant issues.

Although Air Force attorneys cannot file documents or appear for clients in court, legal assistance attorneys can provide general advice on family law issues like divorce, child support and guardianship, and may be able to refer clients to free or low cost services providers in the event that a client’s needs exceed the capabilities of the Base Legal Office.

Legal assistance attorneys are available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10-11 a.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4 p.m. Paralegals can provide power of attorney and notary services 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Fridays.

For more information, call (661) 277-4310.

In celebration of Law Day, the Edwards Legal Assistance Team, in partnership with Desert Wings, plans to bring readers a series of articles, like this, that address common legal issues faced by members of the Edwards community. Look for our next tip in next week’s paper!
