Newcomers’ Orientation: Club Muroc, May 10, 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Required for active duty military, the orientation provides vital information regarding base resources and services, policies and procedures, background and more. Spouses Orientation: AFFTC Conference Center, May 10, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. This orientation is designed especially for spouses and provides valuable information regarding available services, schools, employment and volunteer opportunities, recreation, shopping and more. Free childcare is available as part of the Child Care for PCS program. Bring a copy of PCS orders to the Airman and Family Readiness to obtain a voucher and a list of home daycare providers. SBP/Casualty Assistance Office: The SBP and Casualty Assistance Office is now combined and located in Bldg. 3000, Room 215. Please note: Every retiring member, married or single, must make a valid election prior to retiring. See the SBP counselor for more details. Retired military survivor assistance is available at the A&FRC. Contact the SBP/Casualty Assistance office at (661) 277-3757. Help is available to file claims through various agencies: DFAS, V.A., SSA, OPM.

Air Force Aid Society: Effective today, Air Force active duty/spouse, retired, widow/widower with internet access and an email address will be able to apply for AFAS assistance using the new AFAS Online Application by registering and completing the application at https://my.afas.org/memberportal/Login/Login.aspx. The client completes and submits the application to the Airman and Family Readiness Center at the selected base. The applicant will be instructed to call the center to schedule an appointment. HAP Arnold Scholarship: Concerned about the soaring cost of higher education for your children? Maybe the Air Force Aid Society can help! Under its General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program, the society awards $2,000 each to selected applicants. The program continues to be offered to dependent sons and daughters of active duty, Title 10 AGR/Reservists on extended active duty, Title 32 AGR performing full-time active duty, retired, retired Reservists with 20 plus qualifying years of service, and deceased Air Force members. Spouses (residing stateside) of active duty and Title 10 AGR/Reservists on extended active duty; and surviving spouses of deceased members are also eligible candidates. Don’t think you won’t qualify. Military Family Life Consultant: A Military Family Life Consultant is on board at the A&FRC to help military members, spouses, family members, friends and staff members address issues such as relationships, deployment, parenting, stress, grief and many other issues. Spouse Employment/Volunteer Resource: Link to area employment and volunteer opportunities through your Airman & Family Readiness Center. Individual consultation is also available by appointment to provide assistance with resumes, education opportunities and career development. Transparent Language Online: This effective and engaging language-learning program is available for libraries and their patrons. The program is accessible via the Internet and will be available to Air Force active duty, Air National Guard, Reservists, Retirees and their respective family members. Air Force civilian employees and contractors who are eligible to use an Air Force library are also eligible. All users must register in person at an Air Force library and can then use it anywhere and at anytime. Outdoor Recreation

Make a Million Meters in May: Oasis Aquatic Center, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday-Friday. Cost is FREE. Minimum of five participants, no maximum. This pool challenge is for swimmers to compile their daily/weekly swim distance and see if the entire Edwards community of swimmers can swim a million meters during the month of May. Come to the Oasis Community Center and help all swimmers achieve the goal to a million!

Pool Passes are Now Available: Price is $20 for single, $50 for family of three, then $5 for each additional family member. Passes last from Memorial Day to Labor Day and are good at any of our outdoor pools!

Open Paintball and Airsoft: Scorpions Nest, May 5, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

  • $35 package includes 500 rounds of paint or 2000 BB’s, air (paintball) and equipment rental and field fees
  • $25 package includes air (paintball), equipment rental and field fees
  • $10 field fee
  • $5 all day air (paintball).

Beginners through advanced players are welcome. Games run all day long so bring your lunch and plenty of water!

SCUBA Open Water Classes: May 7 and 8 (class), May 9 and 10 (pool), 4-7 p.m., May 26 and 27 (beach and boat dives). Coordinate with Instructor on times for dives. Cost is $510 and includes everything except mask, snorkel, fins & booties. ~A wide variety of SCUBA courses are now available. Our instructor is flexible on class times and is willing to work with your schedule.

Climbing Class: Oasis Aquatic Center Climbing Wall, May 8, 5 p.m. Cost is $15 (sign-up by noon on the day of class). Minimum of four participants maximum of eight. Learn basic climbing techniques, skill and safety. You will be required to return at a later time to be tested on your training. Successful completion of the class and testing will grant you access to the wall and climbing equipment.

“Big 50:” Thursdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Rod and Gun. The “Big 50″ is an ATA Registered shoot in which each participant shoots 50 single targets, 50 double targets and 50 targets from their handicapped position.

Archery: Come test your equipment at our self use Archery range! The range is FREE to those with their own equipment. If you would like to try archery and do not have equipment; equipment is available for rent at the Rod and Gun Club.

Cooking Equipment: We have oil less infrared cookers and traditional fryers for only $5 a day!

Overnight Camping at Branch Park: Cost is $5 for a campsite for up to four people. Come and get a “wilderness experience” right here on base. This will be primitive camping (no potable water, no telephones, and no RVs).

Private Parties: Rod & Gun, Paintball, and other Outdoor Recreation activities are available for squadron functions and private parties. In addition to using our facilities, let us plan a trip for you! Interested in going somewhere with your squadron or a group of friends? Tell us and we’ll do the legwork for you. Let us know how many people, where you want to go, and what your budget is and we’ll do the rest!

Team Building: Does your office, element or group need some team building? Come talk to us! We have instructors and the facilities to make it a great afternoon/day for you and your staff. Prices vary depending on the activity and group size. Call us today and let’s plan an event!

Private Swimming Lessons: Cost is $15 for a 45-minute lesson, and is open to all ages. Schedule your appointment with one of our lifeguards for a time that works for you! Soccer Penalty Kick Shoot-out Competition: May 9, 4:30 p.m. Sign-up at the fitness center front desk.

Bench Press Competition: May 10, 11 a.m., weigh-in starts at 10:30 a.m. Sign-up at the fitness center front desk.

Two-man Strongman Challenge: Wednesdays, noon. Each week will consist of a different activity. Activities may include tire flip, push-up and sit-up challenges, weighted belt 800 yard relay as well as pull-ups. Points will be given throughout the activities with a Grand Champion announced during the final week.

Healthy Weight Class: Thursdays, noon-1:30 p.m. (call the HAWC for more information).

Zumba Class: Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7 and 8 p.m., and Saturdays at 9 a.m. First come first served; class size is limited to 30 people. For more information, call (661) 275-4961.

Lunchtime Disc Golf at Mojave Greens: Wednesdays, noon, Mojave Greens Disc Golf Course, Hole 1. Join us for a round of lunchtime golf. Players of all skill levels are invited to attend. Experienced golfers will be on hand to offer advice and work with beginners. Equipment will be available for loan. Take this opportunity to meet other disc golfers on base and challenge each other on the course!

Equipment Orientation Classes: Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m., Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m., and Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. Not sure how to use equipment or what it does for you? Stop by the front desk and sign up for this one-hour class. We are here to help you get the most out of your fitness routine.

Keystone Club: Tuesdays, 4:15 p.m. The Keystone Club is a leadership group for high school students to learn and practice leadership skills through the management of community service projects and fund raising activities.

Torch Club: Action Room, May 10, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Are you a leader? Do you want to be a leader but are unsure of where to begin? Torch club is an exciting leadership club that will teach you valuable skills and will help you enhance your leadership capabilities.

Boys & Girls Club ImageMakers National Photography Contest: Imagemakers is a comprehensive photography program for all youth members, ages 6-18 years. This program motivates members to hone their photography skills, encourages them to participate in photography classes, field trips and other arts-related activities as well as showcase their photos in the community.

Boys & Girls Club Power Hour/Project Learn – Join today!

Monday-Thursday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., ages 6-12 years

Power Hour: Making Minutes Count helps Club members be more successful in school by providing homework help, tutoring and encouraging members to become self-directed learners.

Free Thinkers Reading Club: Mondays, 3:30-4:30 p.m., Club Room. Youth will have the opportunity to learn and practice reading, writing and public speaking skills.

Model Building Club: Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m., Club Room. Youth can choose from several plastics models as well as learn building techniques with the end product being their very own.

“One Page at a Time” Air Force Reading Program: This motivational program is open to youth ages 5-13. Children read books, document their literacy accomplishments and earn incentives for their successes!

Edwards Dance Factory: Dance Classes are held at the Creative Arts Center (JZ) for ages 3-15. Receive professional dance instruction in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, competition team, and Disneyland Jazz. There are many great opportunities for youth who love to dance. Toddler Learning Center: Toddler Classes are held at the Creative Arts Center (JZ) for ages 1-4, older siblings are welcome! Are you looking for a class for you and your toddler to participate together? If so, then this is the class for you! TLC is a Mom, Pop & Tot Class that allows families to learn while playing!
