The PLAYpass deadline has been extended through December 31, 2012!!  If your spouse is deployed or you are a single airman returning from a deployment, then come to the A&FRC to get your PLAYpass and register!  PLAYpass discount cards are used for various activities and programs on base for adults and children.  For more information contact the A&FRC.

Ten Steps to Federal Employment: May 18, 1-2:30 p.m., Bldg. 3000 (MSG Conference Room). The class is for spouses, active duty and transitioning military members who are interested in applying for a job with the federal government and developing their resumes.  Topics will include how to navigate through USAjobs, building a resume and education on Military Spouse and Veteran’s preference. Three-day Department of Labor Employment Workshop: Juen 5-7, 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., AFFTC Conference Center. Attendees must register by May 29. Early registration allows time for the Disabled American Veterans representative to pull medical records for review.  Seminar includes job search and resume guidelines, VA brief and review of medical records.  Spouses are encouraged to attend. Flag cases: As requested we now make custom size flag cases with certificate boxes. The cases are handmade in our wood shop by our wood shop instructor, Chuck. You can choose your own size, shape and type of wood (oak, walnut, maple, cherry and mahogany). These are truly a gift to treasure.

Kid’s steakhouse buffet (13 and under)is $6.96 per plate.Menu (children’s menu also available): One top sirloin steak or grilled chicken breast, breaded butterfly shrimp, baked potato bar, vegetables, soup and salad bar, homemade rolls, ice cream, and choice of fountain beverage.

Mongolian Barbecue Stir-Fry: May 25, 5-8 p.m. Cost is $11.95 per bowl for adult members, and $13.95 for non-members. Mongolian for children (13 and under) is $6.95 per bowl. Menu (children’s menu also available): Fill your bowl with fresh vegetables, sauces and seasonings and take back to your table.  Your server will ask for your choice of pork, chicken or beef and take your bowl to be cooked.  Help yourself to beverages, soup, rice or noodles. These dishes are healthy and cooked with very little oil. It doesn’t get any better!

Family Child Care

Family Child Care is seeking dedicated people who love working with children!  If you live on-base and want to care for children in your home or you are a military dependent and live off-base, you may be eligible to be a licensed or affiliated provider!  Make a positive difference in the lives of children! Most materials and training are provided free of charge!

The Benefits of Being a Family Child Care Provider: Being able to work out of your home, working while caring for your own children, being in charge of your own business, doing work that you love, setting your own hours and free training! If you are interested in becoming an FCC licensed or affiliated provider, contact the FCC Office at (661) 275-4322. New provider orientation starting soon! We need providers to offer alternate hours to accommodate evening, swing and weekend duty hours. We are looking for providers to offer care for children with special needs including asthma, allergies, cerebral palsy and other physical impairments. Family Child Care offers care for children, employment of staff and approval of FCC providers with chronic health problems.

Youth Bowling League is coming this fall!  We will be offering a 2012-2013 Fall Youth League.  We are in need of energetic adults to step up and run the league for youth ages 4-18 years. Outdoor Recreation

Open Paintball and Airsoft: May 19, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Scorpions’ Nest.

$35 package includes 500 rounds of paint or 2,000 BB’s, air (paintball) and equipment rental and field fees

Beginners through advanced players are welcome.  Games run all day long so bring your lunch and plenty of water!

Climbing Class: May 22, 5 p.m., Oasis Aquatic Center Climbing Wall. Cost is $15, and sign up is required by noon, May 22. Minimum of four participants, maximum of eight. Learn basic climbing techniques, skill and safety. You will be required to return at a later time to be tested on your training. Successful completion of the class and testing will grant you access to the wall and climbing equipment.

Climbing Trip to New Jack City: May 26, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Prior completion of Wall Climbing Certification class is required. Cost is $30 and sign up is required by May 18. Minimum of four participants, maximum of eight. Enjoy a day of climbing at the spot known as New Jack City near Barstow. We will be focusing on easier routes that are beginner friendly.  This will be a great introduction to the sport and an excellent opportunity to acquaint you with one of many recreational areas in Southern California. Bring your own food and water. ODR will provide equipment and transportation.

Sonic Splash Pool: Memorial Day Weekend: May 26-28, open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Beginning June 1: Open daily, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

Muroc Pool: Beginning June 5: Tuesday-Thursday, noon-6 p.m., Friday, noon-8 p.m., Saturday-Monday: closed.

Oasis Aquatic Center: Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., lap swim only (as of June 4), closed weekends and holidays.

Pool Passes are Now Available: Price is $20 for single, $50 for family of three, then $5 for each additional family member. Passes last from Memorial Day to Labor Day and are good at any of our outdoor pools!

Pool age requirements

Summer ís on its way and Edwards Air Force Base pools will be in full swing. Hereís a friendly reminder of the age requirements for base pools.
Children 10 years of age or younger must be under the direct supervision of an individual who is at least 18 years old. One individual may not supervise more than 10 children. Individuals who are at least 16 years of age, but less than 18 years of age, may provide supervision for up to three children (at least one of whom is over the age of 6), provided that the individual has completed the American Red Cross Babysitting Training. Children aged 11 through 13 may be left unattended only if they can pass a swim test.

May Fitness Month is almost complete but you still have time to get 20 punches on your card during the month of May and receive a FREE lanyard and t-shirt!  One punch per day or participate in any fitness center special event and receive TWO punches on your card.  Pick up your punch cards at the Fitness Center.

Two-man Strongman Challenge: Wednesdays, noon. Each week will consist of a different activity. Activities may include tire flip, push-up and sit-up challenges, weighted belt 800 yard relay as well as pull-ups. Points will be given throughout the activities with a Grand Champion announced during the final week.

Boys & Girls Club ImageMakers National Photography Contest: Imagemakers is a comprehensive photography program for all youth members, ages 6-18 years. This program motivates members to hone their photography skills, encourages them to participate in photography classes, field trips and other arts-related activities as well as showcase their photos in the community.

Edwards Dance Factory: Dance Classes are held at the Creative Arts Center (JZ) for ages 3-15. Receive professional dance instruction in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, competition team, and Disneyland Jazz. There are many great opportunities for youth who love to dance. Toddler Learning Center: Toddler Classes are held at the Creative Arts Center (JZ) for ages 1-4, older siblings are welcome!
