Mark your calendars for Nov. 17.

The Edwards Air Force Base Family Fishing Derby will tentatively be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Branch Memorial Park and Pond near the South Gate.

Come out and enjoy a free day of fishing, food and fun.

Pre-registration is not required to participate in the fishing derby but will help the volunteers with the logistics and planning. If you would like to pre-register, volunteers, with registration forms, will be located in the BX lobby 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Nov. 1.

Ages 2 and up are welcome to participate in the fishing derby, however, adult supervision is required for ages 2-12.
This will be a catch and release derby. Participants are welcome to keep all fish caught during the derby but must follow the restrictions for bass and catfish. Only three bass and three catfish (all over 12-inches in length) may be kept by each angler.

All species of fish caught during the derby will be considered for prizes. There will be four age groups and each age group will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes. Prizes will be awarded based on the total length of a single fish and weight will be used as a tie breaker.

Each angler is limited to one fishing pole and must bring their own bait. All fishing must be done from the shore. Boats, float tubes and waders will not be permitted as part of the derby.

Parent or adult involvement will be limited to baiting hooks and casting (only if needed). Children must hold the reel while fishing. Adults may assist younger children with reeling but the child must be in contact with the pole the entire time and assistance should be kept to a minimum.

Base fishing permits will not be required for derby day but.

Several organizations have stepped up to help support this event and this list continues to grow. A big thank you goes out to the 412th Mission Support Group, Air Force Sergeants Association, Airman Leadership School Booster Club, Enlisted Spouses Club, Environmental Management, First Sergeants Group, Fregoso Outdoor Foundation, Middle Tier, Officer Spouses Club, private party donors, and volunteers.
