Team Edwards launches Hispanic American Heritage Month

The Hispanic American Heritage Month kick-off at the Oasis Community Center started with a salsa contest that ended in monetary prizes. The first place salsa, “El Matador” won a $100 Visa gift card. Closely following, “Grab your Maracas” and “Sweet San Atone” won Visa gift cards for $50 and $25 respectively.

The Oasis Community Center was the site of this year’s Hispanic American Heritage Month kickoff at Edwards AFB Sept. 17. The event featured everything from salsa to salsa dancing.

Team Edwards members were treated to a best salsa contest along with guest speakers and traditional Hispanic dance shows.

The Grupo Folklorico Antelope Valley preformed several traditional Hispanic dances at both the Oasis Community Center and at the weekly 412th Test Wing staff meeting Sept. 17 to help kick off Hispanic American Heritage Month 2013 at Edwards AFB.

Hispanic American Heritage Month began being honored in 1968. It begins each year on Sept. 15, the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American Countries.

Featured guest, Isaac Barcelona, District Director for California State Sen. Steve Knight, shared his story as an Hispanic community leader. Barcelona’s mother decided to move her family to the United States from Mexico because she believed America was a special place. With no ruling class and leaders that serve their communities, Barcelona would have equal opportunity for success. He was inducted into Mexico’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 after 30 years in the music industry. He stated that his greatest value in life is liberty. “I would much rather have liberty than equality any time, any place, no question, no doubt. I want to have the freedom to be whatever I want, whatever I envision, or whatever I am capable of being … you want to have the opportunity and the freedom to compete and be a champion,” said Barcelona.
