TPS says goodbye to T-38As

A T-38 A-model (white) and T-38 C-model are flown in formation one last time at Edwards AFB Sept.19 prior to the last two A models departing Edwards after nearly 40 years of service.

The United States Air Force Test Pilot School here has used the T-38 Talon Supersonic Trainer in its curriculum for decades.

The highly-modified A-model of the aircraft landed at Edwards AFB for the last time Friday, Sept. 20. As a tribute to the aircraft, the flight was designated a “heritage flight” because the A and C models flew together signifying old and new.

The last two T-38As departed Monday, Sept. 23, for Holloman AFB, N.M., to undergo maintenance. While there, the data acquisition systems will be removed and the T-38s will be restored to its traditional configuration.

Following the modifications, they will be sent to Air Combat Command at Langley AFB, Virg., and Tyndall AFB, Fla., to be used as companion trainers for the F-22 Raptor. They will supplement combat practice training as simulated missile targets.

TPS will continue to use the T-38C which has the same airframe and engine, but uses a new “glass cockpit” with integrated avionics displays, head-up display and an electronic “no drop bomb” scoring system.
