The 4th Annual First Sergeants Council Golf Tournament took place March 14 at Muroc Lake Golf Course. The competition, organized by Master Sgt. William Russell, 412th Security Forces Squadron, and Staff Sgt. Adam Shura, Air Force Test Center, brought 86 golfers to the course.
All proceeds from the event were used to support the Edwards Emergency Relief Fund. The fund is used by the First Sergeants Council to aid Airmen in times of need. That may include airfare to get home during an emergency or help with struggles regarding transportation or personal finances.
The relief fund may also be used to support Airmen Against Drunk Driving and holiday programs during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This year, the tournament brought in $2,400 for the fund.
“To me the golf tournament is a perfect fundraiser. It pairs you up with a foursome to go outside and enjoy weather, camaraderie and support our installation services like the golf course,” said Shura. “That right there makes it a success.”
According to Russell, this year’s tournament winners were Mike and Vernon Roberts, Bobby Daniels and Matt Gardepe. The team was awarded an opportunity to golf at a professional course, the Tournament Players Club Valencia.
A hole-in-one and closest to pin prize was also awarded to Ron Ligsay on Hole 17. Ligsay won airfare for two anywhere in the continental United States and a golf bag for closest to the pin.
During the tournament, more than $3,000 in donated prizes were raffled off to participating golfers and everyone was a winner.
Russell and Shura offered their “thanks” to each participant for supporting the Edwards First Sergeants “Desert Diamonds.”
