Team Edwards celebrates Women’s History Month

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3,952,841 children were born in the United States in 2012. That’s nearly four million, American two-year-olds who are potential leaders and thinkers who can change the world, hopefully for the better.

Women’s History Month honors girls who grew up to be just that, world-changers. Celebrating Women’s History dates back to 1981 when Congress authorized and requested that the president proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, “Women’s History Week.”

Congress responded to petitions by the National Women’s History Project by designating the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Today, Americans are encouraged during the month of March to honor the historical achievements of the nation’s women.

President Barack Obama, in his presidential address, offered “unwavering support” as women continue to fight for equality. The address states that the president has signed bills that allow women to fight pay discrimination and empower women in their personal health care decisions.

In addition to the rich national history of American women, there is also a rich history of female Airmen dating back to World War II when Women Air Force Service Pilots became the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft.

Team Edwards will celebrate Women’s History Month with a luncheon, March 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Club Muroc. The guest speaker will be Chief Master Sgt. Lisa Richards, 412th Medical Group superintendent.

“This is the month we recognize amazing women throughout history. Many have made significant impacts to industry, engineering, medical, human rights and many other areas too vast to mention here,” said Richards. “Monday, I’ll ask you to open your mind to other ways that women continue to make significant impact and show courage, character and commitment and you just might know some of them. This is meant to be an uplifting, if slightly different approach to Women’s History. I invite you to join me on the journey!”

Tickets for the luncheon are $13.70 and $11.70 for club members. For more information, call Capt. Regina Dyer at (661) 275-2940 or email regina.dyer@us.af.mil.
