Asian American, Pacific Islander Heritage Month spotlights ‘leadership, opportunity’

Edwards is observing Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage during May by hosting numerous events throughout the base. Events will include a†cultural show, a†color run, and cooking demonstrations to recognize contributions by different ethnic groups.

The heritage month celebrates the collective accomplishments of AAPI descendants and showcases their rich culture and history throughout the installation.

The opening ceremony was May 1 at the Exchange entrance.

An AAPI cooking demonstration will be held in the base commissary May 6 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Several samples will be offered throughout the commissary and recipes will be provided.

A one-mile color run will be held May 9 at 3:30 p.m. at the Roseburg Fitness Center’s obstacle course. A waiver is required to participate.

May 14, the Joshua Tree Dining Facility is hosting an Asian/Pacific themed†lunch to include egg drop soup, Szechuan chicken, sweet and sour pork, tempura fried fish, egg rolls, steamed rice, fried rice, fried cabbage, corn, and green beans.

Throughout May, the Base Library will have a display case filled with artifacts to raise awareness about AAPI heritage. In addition, the library will be hosting story time with preschoolers May 14 and May 21 at 10 a.m.

On 20 May, preschoolers will have story time at 9 a.m. followed by arts and crafts time at the Child Development Center.
A Sumo wrestling tournament is scheduled for May 22 at the Roseburg Fitness Center starting at 3 p.m. To sign up, contact Airman 1st Class†Cyrus King at (661) 277-3272.

The AAPI celebration culminates May 29 with the 7th annual cultural show and food tasting in the Airman and Family Readiness Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature songs, dances, and food samples from many Asian and Pacific cultures.

The AAPI Heritage Challenge will be available to all base network users from May 1 to 23 at the Edwards Sharepoint page. On May 27, participants will receive the AAPI Heritage Challenge solutions and notification of APA Heritage Challenge finalists.
Finalists will compete at the AAPI cultural show and food tasting event on May 29, where an AAPI Heritage Challenge winner will be crowned.
