Read Across America Day at General Myer Elementary School

Friday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday. It was also the National Education Association’s “Read Across America Day,” a day when thousands of guest readers go into schools across the United States and read to students, mainly from Dr. Suess’s books. Many scholars consider Suess’s cadence and rhymes to be vital tools in the development of literacy.

When Nathalie O’Shea, director, Blue Star Families Fort Huachuca Chapter, asked the class, “What was Dr. Seuss’s first name?” it was student Matthew Buchenhain, 10, who immediately responded, “Theodor!” He received a copy of “The Lorax” and proudly noted, “I’m going to read this book and take a test on it! I try to read and take tests on all of Dr. Seuss’s books.”

Every student in Bovara’s class received Dr. Seuss stickers, bookmarks, and a new, library-quality book courtesy of Blue Star Families, a national nonprofit organization that works to support and empower military families.

General Myer Elementary School Librarian, Marsha Hamric, helped coordinate O’Shea’s visit. Hamric noted that Dr. Seuss is one of the people she most admires. “He is one person who inspired so many kids to read.  Millions of kids are reading today because of him. Reading is like any other skill; you need to practice to become good at it.

“It is important, because you need to read for the rest of your life,” stated Hamric. As Dr. Seuss said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
