A broadcaster from the Fort Huachuca Public Affairs Office was a third-place winner in the 2011 Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Journalism Awards Competition at the Department of the Army level.

Thom Williams’ broadcast, “Fort Report “” Soldier Fueling Initiative,” took third place in the ‘television newsbreak (individual award)’ category.

Once a year, U.S. Army print and broadcast journalists, Soldiers and civilians worldwide, compete in up to 40 categories in this prestigious journalism competition which is judged by a panel of military, commercial media and academia professionals.

This is a third-time broadcast win for Williams; he was a first-place winner of a broadcast award for 2010 for his “Triathlon” segment, which was a second win.

He earned his first journalism award as a Soldier while serving on a broadcast news team in Korea.

Williams has also competed and won a KLW award in print journalism for a total of four awards earned until this point in his journalism career.

When he retired from the military and became a Department of the Army civilian working in the FH public affairs office, he initially wrote for “The Fort Huachuca Scout.” He earned a journalism award for a story he wrote in 2006 about Army civilian marathon swimmer, Anna Delozier, who competed in the Steelhead Triathlon here.

Williams has competed for KLW awards since 1985.

Earning a Keith L. Ware award is considered a major accomplishment; for 2011, there were more than 400 entries from Army commands worldwide in the print and broadcast journalism categories. Only those entries that took first-place awards at lower command levels were advanced to the DA-level competition.

At the Installation Management Command level, Williams took third place in the ‘television news report category’ for his segment, “Soldier Fire Training.” His “Aviation Versus MI Flag Football” earned him another third place in the ‘television sports report’ category. In the ‘television spot production’ category, Williams took another third place for “B-Troop Recruits.”

Williams also received honorable mention in the ‘television feature report’ category for a piece he produced, “Army Strong Day.”

Other members of the PAO staff also earned IMCOM-level KLW awards.

Sgt. 1st Class Dexter Marquez and Spc. Kalie Jones took second place in the ‘picture page, military (unit award)’ category for their joint Veterans Day coverage, “Veterans recognized, appreciated, thanked on Friday.”

Alton Dunham’s “All-Army boxing” took third place in the ‘story series, civilian’ category.

Beth Bellizzi, a volunteer writer, received an honorable mention in the ‘contribution by stringer, writing’ category for her article, “Group honors 30 years of easing pain of loss.”
