I love my job!
As the Fort Huachuca Army Volunteer Corps coordinator at Army Community Service, I have the opportunity to work with our community volunteers every day. I have been an active volunteer since I was in the 4th grade, and here I am some 30-odd years later still giving back to my community. One of the missions is to assist our Soldiers, families, civilians and retirees in matching their passion with community work.
This year across the Army, volunteers will be celebrated and recognized under the theme “The Force Behind the Force†during the 2012 National Volunteer Week. I cannot think of a more valid statement or theme that describes what our volunteers do for our community. Last year, we were able to present a check to Col. Timothy Faulkner, commander, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Huachuca, in the amount of $1,395,427.44. While the check is symbolic, it does represent the 65,000 hours of volunteer service that was donated to the Fort Huachuca community.
Registered volunteers should plan to attend the 2012 Fort Huachuca Volunteer of the Year Luncheon on Wednesday, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre. The ceremony will include a red carpet entry, volunteer’s name on the Volunteer Star Walk of Fame, a memento and free lunch. Guests wishing to attend with their volunteer will be charged a fee.
