General Myer Elementary School
The 5th grade students are enjoying World drumming in Ms. Gallantâ€™s music class. They are learning about the different countries of Africa, applying polyrhythms to their playing and working as a team â€” keeping the beat consistent. They hope to show some of their talents at the Talent Show in May.
In Ms. Bradyâ€™s art class, the third grade has been learning about rock art pictographs and petroglyphs. They pretended they were â€œcave artistsâ€ painting pictograph pictures with â€œfake blood paintâ€ on rock rubbings. Afterwards, they presented their work to their classes. They are also learning about fractions by using plastic circle fraction manipulatives to create overlapping circle fraction designs.
Fourth grade students are writing poems to create an illustrated book of six poems. They are writing twoÂ cinquains, one haiku, one bio-poem, one diamante poem, and an acrostic poem. The fourth graders are also designing and making book covers for their portfolio of poems.
Fifth graders have created illustrated scrolls which tell a story, like movie film does. They presented their scroll stories to their classes.
The fifth graders also learned about similar and congruent figures by creating pictures which illustrate the concept, by using plastic geometric shapes to trace. They learned about Georgia Oâ€™Keeffe and painted watercolor paintings of flowers from a bugâ€™s eye perspective. The flowers are drawn larger than the paper so the petals are going off the sides of the paper and the center of the flower is big. They used a crayon-resist technique with the watercolor paint.
The students also learned about the artist, M.C. Escher, and how he liked to include tessellating designs in his work. They created their own tessellating shape which they traced in a pattern on paper. Then, they had to create a repeating figure out of the shape.
All classes will be creating foil action figures during the week of AIMS testing.
