DUIs: Make right choice for prevention

By Maj. Gen. Gregg Potter
U.S. Army Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca Commanding General

Accidents sometimes happen, but accidents caused by driving under the influence are 100 percent preventable. You can make the right choice. Each of us has the power to prevent DUIs and accidents caused by DUIs and keep our community safe. The consequences of driving under the influence can be severe. It all starts with the choices you make.

According to the Army Center for Substance Abuse Programs survey, 11 percent of Soldiers in the Army reported operating a vehicle under the influence in the last year and 10 percent of Soldiers on Fort Huachuca reported the same.

The best way to avoid a DUI is to take the time to develop a plan or make decisions when you are sober. Prepare for the unexpected and always have a backup plan. No one knows what the future will hold but we can do our part to prevent accidents by making decisions with a clear mind and body.

As always, we must be committed to keeping our community safe and leading by example to set the standard for our Soldiers and family members — safety starts with you!

I encourage you and your loved ones to join us May 11 at the Murr Recreation Center from 8 a.m. — 2:30 p.m. to support the 2012 Fort Huachuca Safety Fair. There will be several booths, events and free give-aways for everyone, so come out and learn more about what you can do to stay safe and have a great summer!
