Chalk Talk May 17, 2012

Compiled by Jill Peterson

General Myer Elementary School

Ms. Akers’ 4th grade class went on a field trip to the National Parks Service’s Coronado National Memorial in Hereford. They relived the meeting between Spanish conquistador Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and the Zuni Tribe.

During the meeting, they dressed up as explorers and Zuni tribesmen and got to experience what it was like to communicate with sign language and how the Spanish and Native Americans traded with each other. They also learned how the Zuni made clothing from fibers removed from the native plants. The students got to beat the fibers out of the native plants to see where the materials came from for making clothing and other household items. Finally, they learned about the hunters and gatherers and how they lived off of the land. They also got to see what it was like to grind corn into corn meal. This was a hands-on experience and an effective review of their unit on Coronado.

As this school year comes to a close, Mrs. Bergman and her class would like to thank school Principal, Mrs. Johnson, and all the other Myer staff members who have helped the class learn and achieve their goals. They thank the parents for all their help and support with school work, field trips, class parties and learning projects this school year. Mrs. Bergman thanks her class for a job well done and wishes everyone a wonderful summer!
