Fort Huachuca “tipped its hat” to military spouses on Friday. The Military Spouse Appreciation Night allowed everyone to enjoy a night out and hit the dance floor at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre. Love letters decorated the walls sharing Soldiers’ words of appreciation, endearment and love with their spouses.

May is National Military Appreciation Month. Not only do people celebrate the men and women in uniform, but they also celebrate the men and women who stand behind those who serve in the U.S. military. They can be considered the heart of the home front, facing countless deployments, permanent change-of-station moves, temporary duty assignments, weekend drills and field problems, frequently serving as single parents. They are “the silent ranks” of the military.

The Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate and Army Community Service banded together to sponsor Military Spouse Appreciation Night Friday at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre, with a night to recognize military spouses for their support and sacrifices. The event offered a night of food, dancing, prizes and free childcare for those with children registered with Child and Youth Services. ACS and FMWR raffled off prizes which included gift cards from local merchants.

The grand prize, a seven-night resort stay at one of more than 1,000 vacation areas offered by Government Vacation Rewards, was won by military spouse, Soithza Duncanson.

Kashina Holiday, wife of U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence Command Sgt. Maj. Todd Holiday, saluted fellow military spouses with a recitation of Jenn Pineo’s poem, “Letter from a Military Spouse,” which painted a picture of the author’s interpretation of what it means to be married to someone in the military.

Holiday went on to say, “Tonight we recognize the strength and dedication of those who support our great defenders of freedom. Real support requires real action, like the action to volunteer with your Family Readiness Group, the Post Chapel or by serving on one of the numerous boards in the community. Your actions and choices are real, and as a result, we serve with the world’s finest fighting force — our U.S. military. Thank you for making the choice to serve with your American hero.”

Raffle winner Soithza Duncanson walked away with the grand prize, a seven-night resort stay at one of more than 1,000 resorts, a raffle prize provided by Government Vacation Rewards. A number of prizes and gift cards donated by local merchants were raffled off during the event.

Spc. Dave Barber, 11th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, and wife, Christina, enjoy a night out, courtesy of the Fort Huachuca Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate and Army Community Service. Fort Huachuca honors spouses for the continuous support they give to their Soldiers and the mission.
