Recently, Sierra Vista has been experiencing preventable vehicle burglaries. Many of these burglaries, and the resulting losses to the victims, can be prevented with some simple actions on everyone’s part.
Don’t become the victim of a vehicle burglary. Use simple tips to keep valuables safe.
Be sure to roll up windows and always lock all doors when exiting a vehicle. Think “Lock it or lose it!â€
Physically check vehicle doors before leaving to ensure they are closed and locked.
Never leave valuables such as purses, wallets, cell phones, computers, loose change, GPS systems or CDs in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The trunk is a more secure storage place. Those who choose to keep valuables in the trunk should deactivate the interior trunk release.
Put away charging cables. Even if the criminal can’t see the valuable item, the charger may send a signal to the criminal that the valuable item is somewhere in the car.
If the car stereo has a detachable faceplate, be sure to detach it and store it in a secure place.
Remember that a loud car stereo is not only illegal; it advertises the sound system to criminals.
Park in well-lit, well-traveled areas away from shrubbery that would obscure the view of the vehicle.
Those who use an interior windshield sunshade, be sure to park in a manner that does not limit the view inside the vehicle such as backing against a solid wall.
Those who have them should use car alarms and garages.
Those who live on Fort Huachuca should also make it a habit to follow these tips.
