Throughout our Nation’s history, military and civilian communities have responded to enormous challenges with great courage. Our Nation’s citizens continue to make personal sacrifices to safeguard our freedom and the freedom of others less fortunate. Thank you for your continued service which ensures their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
These next few months are statistically the deadliest time of year for Soldiers off duty, and accidents involving privately owned vehicles, motorcycles and watercraft pose the greatest risk. I urge leaders at all levels to engage their Soldiers regarding the topic of “safety.†Safety is not only a leader’s responsibility; it is also an individual’s responsibility. I encourage each of you to identify and assess risks, then implement the appropriate measures to ensure safety. Small changes in awareness and attitude can make the difference between life and death. We must always act responsibly.
This year, experts estimate the number of Memorial Day vacationers traveling more than 50 miles from home will increase; placing millions on the road across the nation. This means the odds of being involved in an accident increase. Be mindful of those factors that increase your chances of being involved in an accident. These include fatigue, safe following distances, speeding and driving distractions. Do your part to keep America’s highways safe!
No matter what activity you choose this holiday weekend; consider the risks, develop a plan, and adapt a mindset which recognizes and acknowledges safety as success. Take care of yourselves, your families and your battle buddies. Remember “safety first,†and have a great holiday!
