Teen volunteer program announced

Sierra Vista’s Leisure and Library Services is accepting applications for the summer Teen Volunteer Program. Teens will perform a variety of summer volunteer jobs to include recreation, sports, clerical and aquatic volunteer positions. Volunteers are responsible for transportation to and from the assigned work location at the agreed-on hours.

Volunteers for Kid’s WORLD positions must be at least 14 and 16 for any sports program position.

Youth police academy offered

The Sierra Vista Police Department hosts a Summer Youth Academy 12:30 – 4:30 p.m., weekdays, June 19 – 29 for youth 15 – 18. Events include: emergency vehicle driving; drunk driving education; hands-on firearms education; a tour of the Cochise County Sheriff’s jail facility; and more.

Free youth hunt-related event

The Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be hosting a Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship event on June 2, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Fort Huachuca’s Sportsman’s Center. This free event is for children 17 and younger.

Activities for different age classes include certified instructor’s teaching shooting of shotguns, pellet guns, and archery. Participants will also learn the basics of calling and setting up to hunt a variety of wildlife. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with activities beginning at 9. All participants and their families will be served lunch at this free event. All youth will receive a free, one year JAKE membership.

Wyatt Earp Days coming

Tombstone’s 31st Annual Wyatt Earp Day’s celebration is scheduled for Friday – Sunday, on Historic Allen Street.

The event, sponsored by the Tombstone Lion’s Club, will feature three full days of entertainment from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day, including a gun-fighting skit competition and a historic costume competition.

The Wyatt Earp Days Chili Cook-Off will take place on May 27 between 4th and 3rd Streets at 1 p.m. with cup sales starting at 1 p.m.

Western singer to appear at AFP

The Arizona Folklore Preserve will present a leading Western entertainer, R.W. Hampton, in a one-day only performance on June 2. Show times are 2 and 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Tickets for children 17 and under are $6.

AFP is located six miles south of Sierra Vista. Take State Route 92 to Ramsey Canyon Road. Turn right (west), drive 3.3 miles into the canyon, and watch for the AFP entrance and sign to the left.

Blingy Shoe Competition planned

Decorate sneakers, flip-flops, desert boots, crocks, sandals, or cowboy boots for a fun evening under the stars at the semi formal Ambiance and History event at the Sarah Gibbs Botanical Garden at the Sierra Vista library June 2, 5:30 – 8 p.m. Dress up, enjoy food, wine, entertainment, enter a Chinese auction and compete in the Blingy Shoe Competition for $35 per person. Tickets are available at the Ethel Berger Center, 417.6980.

Get young family members outdoors!

The Sierra Vista Ranger District, Coronado National Forest will hold a Get Outdoors Day, June 9, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Parker Canyon Lake. This event, designed to get youth active and interested in the outdoors is free and open to the public.

Events include a free fishing clinic, reptile exhibit, information booths by various agencies, nature walks at 10 a.m. and noon, educational programs and more.

Riding classes for seniors offered

CANTER, Cochise Area Network of Therapeutic Equestrian Resources, is offering classes under the Silver Saddles Program, a riding program for adults 60 and over who are interested in learning to ride or who want to polish up their riding skills. Classes are 45 minutes and cost $20 per session. Participant forms, including a physician’s statement, are required and can be found at www.canteraz.org under “students.”

Warrant officers plan golf tournament

The U.S. Army Warrant Officer Association Arizona Silver Chapter will hold a golf tournament June 17 at Turquoise Valley Golf and RV Park in Naco. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m. Format will be a four-player scramble.

The $75 fee includes golf, cart, lunch, trophies and prizes. Registration closes June 4.

Vendors sought for garlic festival

Triangle T Historic Guest Ranch and the Rich Crest Farms seek vendors for the 3rd Annual Garlic Festival, July 28 – 29 at 4190 Dragoon Rd., Dragoon.

There will be a farmers market, face painting, magic demonstrations, old west re-enactments, live music, cooking contest and garlic cooking demonstrations

Watch birds at EOP

Join an approximately 3-hour public bird watching tour, led by docents of several bird watching organizations, at the Environmental Operations Park every Sunday. Tours are limited to 22 people on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tours leave from State Route 90 between Mile Marker 324 and 325, Sierra Vista, at 8 a.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
