Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club scholarship awardees, Courtney Anderson and her mother Tracy, offer their thanks to new FHCSC President Traci Haggard (on right). Courtney, a Buena High School senior, plans to attend Cochise College and study law and psychology, with the goal of becoming a child advocate. Tracy, a National Guard spouse, will also enroll in Cochise College and join her daughter in studying psychology.
The Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club awarded over $18,000 in scholarships at its annual scholarship luncheon and installation of new board members on May 16 at the Windermere Hotel in Sierra Vista. The club’s 38 scholarships were provided to area high school seniors, college students and military spouses. Each award ranged from $300 to $1,000.
According to club member Wendy Breen who served on the Scholarship Committee, “Everyone who applied was an excellent student. What set our awardees apart from the rest was that they were well-rounded. They participated in the community, activities at their school, or they worked.â€
The non-profit community service club, which has been in operation for over 60 years, holds four annual fundraising events to finance the scholarships and community organization grants it provides. The FHCSC raised over $30,000 during the past year.
Club membership is open to anyone in the military regardless of rank or branch of service, civilians, retirees and community residents who would like to support the club’s mission. In addition to the fundraising events, the club hosts monthly luncheons for members at local places of interest. These events afford members the opportunity to network and learn more about the community.
The club’s next event is a membership luncheon, which is scheduled for August. Further details are not yet available.
