Women vets — share your story

(The following is provided as a public service from the Fort Huachuca Retiree Council and was written by Melanie Mouras.)

Author seeks notable women veterans

Dr. G.L.A. Harris, an associate professor and researcher at Oregon’s Portland State University, is researching the lives of former military women (all ranks and services) for a book she is writing. Specifically, she is seeking those who assumed precedent-setting roles, including women with unique achievements, nontraditional occupations or critical assignments. To share your stories or those of another veteran, contact Harris at Glah@pdx.edu or 1.503.725.9594.

VA eliminates copayment for in-home TeleHealth care

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced in early May that it no longer charges veterans a copayment when they receive care in their homes from VA health professionals who use video conferencing. This change primarily benefits veterans with limited mobility, such as patients with spinal cord injuries. When medically appropriate, the VA will make the veteran’s home the preferred place of care to ensure timely and convenient access to VA services.

VA issues firearms reminder

Arizona firearms permits, including those allowing concealed weapons, do not apply at VA facilities and properties. Federal law supersedes Arizona law in that regard, and the VA states that those found in possession of a firearm on federal property are subject to arrest, citation and confiscation of the firearm.

DFAS warns of email scam

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service warns of email scams targeting service personnel, retirees, and civilian employees. One recent scam states that individuals receiving disability compensation from the VA may be able to obtain additional funds from the Internal Revenue Service, but only if they send copies of their income tax information. Do NOT open attachments or click on any link in email of this type. As a result of this particular scam, DFAS has developed a special page on its website, www.dfas.mil, for anyone receiving these types of email.

Mailing address changes for Express Scripts

Express Scripts has a new mailing address for paper claims submitted by TRICARE beneficiaries. Those who submit paper claims should now send them to Express Scripts, P.O. Box 52132, Phoenix, AZ, 85082. All other Express Scripts addresses remain unchanged.

Preauthorizing MEDICARE services

Skilled nursing facilities must preauthorize care provided to MEDICARE-eligible TRICARE beneficiaries when medically necessary skilled nursing services extend beyond Medicare’s 100-day limit and TRICARE becomes the primary payer for a beneficiary. Medical documentation must be submitted; this way, the preauthorization is requested by the skilled nursing facility, and the burden should not fall on beneficiaries or their families.
