Fly fishing club meets

San Pedro Flycasters Club member Pat Richards will be the guest speaker at the next club meeting, tonight, 6:30 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain Community Church, 4029 E. Golden Acres Drive, in Sierra Vista. Richards will present a power point show on the south island of New Zealand. Zane Grey went fly fishing in New Zealand during the 1920s and declared the country the “Angler’s Eldorado.”

Get youth outdoors, active

The Sierra Vista Ranger District, Coronado National Forest will hold a Get Outdoors Day, Saturday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Parker Canyon Lake. This event is designed to get youth active and interested in the outdoors. It is free and open to the public.

Events include a free fishing clinic, reptile exhibit, information booths by various agencies, nature walks at 10 a.m. and noon, educational programs and more.

Learn about basic geology

Judy Phillips, local environmental educator, will share a number of activities that will deepen or enhance attendees’ knowledge of basic geology, the study of minerals and how they form. Activities are hands-on and appropriate for families with school-age children.

The program takes place Sunday, 1:30 p.m. at the Carr House Visitor Information Center.

The public is invited to this free event.

Carr House VIC, operated by the volunteer Friends of the Huachuca Mountains, is located up Carr Canyon Road off State Route 92. Turn right just before Mesquite Tree Restaurant and drive approximately three miles to the driveway which will be on the left-hand side of the road after passing through a concrete wash.

 

Riding classes for seniors offered

CANTER, Cochise Area Network of Therapeutic Equestrian Resources, is offering classes under the Silver Saddles Program, a riding program for adults 60 and over who are interested in learning to ride or who want to polish up their riding skills. Classes are 45 minutes and cost $20 per session. Participant forms, including a physician’s statement, are required and can be found at www.canteraz.org under “students.”

Nominate veteran for special honors

The Second Annual Independence Day Music Festival, Tues., July 3, at Salt River Fields, Scottsdale, will honor five veterans for their service.

The public is invited to nominate a member of the military, someone they believe to be extraordinary in their service to this country.

Nomination deadline is June 15. Nomination forms are available at http://www.saltriverfields.com/Libraries/Documents/Veteran_Nomination_Form.sflb.ashx.

Instructions for submission are on the nomination form.

Honorees receive VIP tickets to the music festival, season tickets to Salt River Fields events, and an “insider’s tour” of the nationally recognized facility, which serves as the MLB Spring Training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies.

Doors open at 5 p.m.; mainstage music begins at 5:45 p.m.

Fireworks are scheduled at 10:30 p.m.

Tennis lessons for youth offered

The City of Sierra Vista Youth Summer Tennis Lessons will begin on July 9 with registration beginning on June 18. Beginner lessons for youth 6-10 will be from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. The 11-17 year old beginner, advanced beginner/intermediate lessons for those 6-17 years old will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. also on Mondays and Wednesdays for four consecutive weeks. The registration fee is $55 per student, with each class limited to 12. Lessons will be taught by a United States Tennis Association Certified Instructor and held at the Oscar Yrun Community Center Tennis Courts, 3020 E. Tacoma St.

Register is at all Leisure Services facilities. A minimum of four students must be registered to conduct the lessons.

 

Attend citizen police academy

The next Sierra Vista Police Department Citizen Police Academy is scheduled to begin Aug. 1, Wednesday evenings, 6 – 9 p.m., for 12 consecutive weeks in the Police Department Auditorium.

Students will tour the police facility, train with simulated weapons, learn to process evidence, participate in a ride-along with an on-duty police officer and get law-enforcement related training. Academy graduates will have an “insider’s” view of SVPD law enforcement operations.

There is no cost and snacks and refreshments are provided.

Run around the park 

The City’s Leisure & Library Services invites the public to the summer 5K Run Around the Park, July 28 at 7 a.m. The cost for the race is $15 per person and will increase to $20 the day of the race. A $1 discount will be given to members of the Thunder Mountain Running Club.

Runners who pre-register will receive a race T-shirt. First, second and third place individual awards will be presented in eight male and female age divisions The race starts and ends in the parking lot at Apache Middle School. Vendors sought for garlic festival

Triangle T Historic Guest Ranch and the Rich Crest Farms seek vendors for the 3rd Annual Garlic Festival, July 28 – 29 at 4190 Dragoon Rd., Dragoon.

There will be a farmers market, face painting, magic demonstrations, old west re-enactments, live music, cooking contest and garlic cooking demonstrations

Watch birds at EOP

Join an approximately 3-hour public bird watching tour, led by docents of several bird watching organizations, at the Environmental Operations Park every Sunday. Tours are limited to 22 people on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tours leave from State Route 90 between Mile Marker 324 and 325, Sierra Vista, at 8 a.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Hike on Mondays

The Monday Hikers group hikes to areas throughout Southeastern Arizona. Interested persons should meet in the Sears parking lot at The Mall at Sierra Vista, 7 a.m. on Mondays. Admission is free.

CANTER seeks volunteers

Horse lovers who have a morning each week to volunteer are invited to join CANTER, which needs horse handlers and side walkers to support their therapeutic riding program for children and adults with disabilities. CANTER operates Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 7388 Chief Joseph Dr. off Moson Road, Hereford.
