The Sierra Vista Public Library always has something going on and this year is no exception! The major summer event is always the Summer Reading Program for youth entering 1st through 12th grades, but there are other events, activities, materials and programs for everyone.
Summer Book Discussion series
Those who enjoy reading books and discussing them with a group, should consider joining the library’s Book Discussion Group. The group leader selects books and a theme, and the group explores important ideas in literature, science, government, culture and religion. This summer’s theme is “Our American Life†with books about America’s past and present. Upcoming books include “Who Will Run the Frog Hospital?†by Lorrie Moore, and “My New American Life†by Francine Prose. Interested readers can request a book from the circulation desk. The volunteer group, Friends of the Library, provided the books.
Superhero summer movies
The library offers Wednesday movie matinees every month on the first and third Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in the Mona Bishop Room. Join the staff for free popcorn and discussion after the movies. This summer will feature superheroes as moviegoers will see “Captain America,†“Thor†and “Green Hornet.†No movie will be shown on July 4.
Going on vacation?
Take some books along! It’s never been easier to hit the road with a book when vacationers can take them in paper, as an audiobook or as an e-book. New books arrive daily at the library in many different formats. Besides the paper books patrons will find on the library shelves, the Sierra Vista Public Library also has hundreds of audiobooks available on CD, and digital audiobooks available from any computer that people can put on many popular devices. The library’s digital audiobooks can be downloaded onto Mac computers and PCs and then transferred to iPhones, iPods, iPads and other types of MP3 players.
The library’s e-book collection has also grown to nearly 800 books, up from only 200 titles in October. Audiobooks and e-books have the same lending period as paper books — up to three weeks.

Hopefully library users find themselves with a few peaceful moments this summer and don’t mind sharing a couple of them with the library staff by taking a short survey. Library personnel would like readers’ help and input in order to improve the way library staff lets everyone know about upcoming programs, classes and other events. Those who don’t have their library cards yet can stop by today at 2600 Tacoma Street with a photo ID, proof of an address within the county, or a copy of their orders if just visiting for awhile. The first card is always free!
