Local audiology clinic opens
The Department of Veterans Affairs Clinic on Coronado Drive, Sierra Vista, has opened its audiology clinic. Those eligible and wishing to avoid the drive to Tucson can call 629.4802 for an appointment.
Commissary announces special sales, hours
The Fort Huachuca Commissary will hold a produce farmer’s market Friday – Sunday. Summer produce items, many at reduced prices, will be available. Offerings include watermelon, fresh corn and cantaloupe. Additionally, the Commissary reminds patrons of its holiday hours on July 4th, Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Military golfers welcomed to Turquoise Valley
The Turquoise Valley Golf Club in Naco is offering special military prices on July 4, September 3, and Veterans Day. Active and retired military, and all veterans, can play for free with just a $10.00-per-person cart fee. Enjoy a good deal at a fun course.
Military mail bans lithium
The United States Postal Service recently joined other international agencies in prohibiting products containing lithium from being sent through the mail to and from APO, FPO and DPO locations and on international commercial air flights. The ban impacts both international and military mail and prohibits shipment of products containing lithium, such as camera batteries. Note that this new prohibition does not apply to lithium batteries mailed within the United States or its territories.

Navy Safe Harbor seeks volunteers
Designed to help transition wounded warriors back into civilian life, the Navy’s Safe Harbor Anchor Program matches a sailor returning to his or her local community with a mentor who will provide local support and assistance. This is the Navy’s lead organization for coordinating non-medical care of the seriously wounded, ill or injured. Navy Safe Harbor continuously seeks senior volunteer mentors.

Social Security seeks veterans
Columbia University is conducting research to better improve wounded warriors’ access to Social Security Disability benefits. Dr. Michelle Ballan, at 1.212.852.2221, will interview qualified veterans or those currently serving (either by phone or in her office in New York City). Her goal is to provide feedback and recommendations in order to increase benefits enrollment for those eligible.
Qualified participants include current or former members of the military who became disabled after January 1, 2006, are over 18, and have been medically diagnosed with a disability that has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year.
Participants will receive an incentive payment and do not have to be current recipients of Social Security benefits.
