RWBAHC offers preventive services for men

Preventive services and screenings such as blood pressure and cholesterol can be vital to detecting many health conditions early. According to the CDC, women are 100 percent more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men. Just because a person may feel fine doesn’t mean they don’t need an annual check-up. Certain diseases and conditions may not have symptoms, so check-ups help diagnose issues early or before they can become a problem. By making prevention a priority, men have the opportunity to greatly improve their health and life expectancy.

Dr. Marc Smith of Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center describes what preventive screenings are available for men.

“Here at RWBAHC, routine examination includes skin, eye exam, hearing, thyroid screen, check your heart, lungs, abdomen, neurological and musculoskeletal system, prostate, and glucose levels.

“Face it gentlemen, 20 to 30 years beating our boots is hard on the body, but, you continue to exercise, nothing crazy, 150 minutes a week,” he says.

“Watch your blood pressure! Watch your blood pressure! Watch your blood pressure! You catch on. Blood pressure affects the brain, eyes, kidneys, heart, and reproductive system. Get a colonoscopy at age 50. Hey, if I can do it, you can do it. I would not, as a provider, make a patient do anything I would not do for promoting their health.”

Eating healthy is also important, Smith advises. Starting can be easy, such as making small steps like saying “no” to super-sizing, saying “yes” to a healthy breakfast and adding at least one fruit and vegetable to every meal.

Smith emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy weight.

“Obesity is a problem. Like blood pressure, obesity affects the body several ways. The heart works harder pumping blood. You can get fat around the heart and liver. It’s hard on your joints, it can elevate your blood pressure, upset your sexual drive and increase your chances of diabetes. You cannot lose it all in one day, but you can in a year. I have seen it happen.”
