Prescott museum joins Blue Star Museums 

Sharlot Hall Museum has joined the Blue Star Museum program, offering free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day. The program is a partnership involving the National Endowment of the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 1,500 museums across America.

The museum offers both free daily admission and free admission to its summer festivals. Active duty military members and Families can visit Fort Whipple Museum, free year-round, to learn about Arizona’s military history.

PFLAG to meet Wednesday

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays will hold its monthly meeting in Sierra Vista, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church office, 125 S. Second St. PFLAG is a national non-profit organization with more than 200,000 members and supporters and more than 500 chapters located in all 50 states. In a confidential setting, members provide support and information to counter myths and misinformation about sexual orientation and gender identity. Everyone is welcome.

Enroll in citizen fire academy

Those interested in learning about the local fire organization and operations are invited to enroll in the 2012 Sierra Vista Fire Department’s Citizens Fire Academy which begins July 12 and runs from 6 – 9 p.m. each Thursday night from 6 – 9 p.m.

Topics include life safety, emergency medical services, fire prevention, fire ground operations and more. Instructors are SVFD personnel. Academy graduates will have an “insider’s” view of SVFD fire operations.

See concerts in Sierra Vista park

Join friends tonight at the Summer Concert in the Park. The 62nd Army Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Park, Fry Boulevard, Sierra Vista at the Centennial Pavilion. There is no admission.

Have summer fun on July 14

Join Mountain Vista Communities and more than 20 vendors at the 2nd Annual Summer Bash, July 14, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Mountain Vista Community Center, 102 Davis. Family oriented activities include jumping castles, free face painting and more. The entire military community is invited. Vendors will be selling crafts, other items and food. Games include Jell-o eating and water balloon tossing contests. No RSVP is needed.

Visit Indian art market

The 15th Annual Prescott Indian Art Market will take place July 14, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and July 15, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., at the Sharlott Hall Museum two blocks west of the Courthouse Plaza, 415 West Gurley St., Prescott. The show will feature more than 100 celebrated artists, contemporary and traditional art demonstrations, native dancers, musicians, singers and food.

Admission is $5 for adults; children are admitted for free.

Observe Hummingbird banding

Join other observers at hummingbird banding sessions on Fort Huachuca, scheduled for one-half-hour after sunrise until approximately 10 a.m. Dates are July 15 and 29. Banding takes place at the Public Affairs Office, across from the gazebo on Brown Parade Field.

Explore bats and their world

The Friends of the Huachuca Mountains and Carr House’s next Sunday afternoon presentation is Going Batty Over Bats! On July 15, 1:30 p.m., Jane Chambers, local environmental educator, will present a family-oriented program about bats. Learn about bat myths and discover how interesting and important bats are to the balance of nature. The presentation takes place at the Carr House, Carr Canyon Road.

Join Buffalo Soldier site tour

The next guided Tour of Buffalo Soldier Historic Sites takes place July 21. Learn about the history of Fort Huachuca and the legendary Buffalo Soldiers who fought during the Indian Wars.

Reservations are a must. Participants will meet at the Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma Street at 1 p.m. to board the van for the tour onto Fort Huachuca. Admission is $15 with children 12 and under admitted free.

Adults invited to Diamondbacks game 

The City of Sierra Vista’s Leisure Services Department plans a trip to Chase Field as the Diamondbacks take on the Astros on July 22 for adults 18 and older. The $35 cost includes transportation and admission to the game. There will be a dinner stop at a restaurant on the way home. Bring money for food and drinks.

Vans depart from the Ethel Berger Center at 9 a.m. and return home around 9 p.m. Space is limited; register now at all Leisure Services Facilities.
