See concerts in Sierra Vista park

The Desert Swing Combo will perform at 6:30 p.m. tonight in Veterans’ Memorial Park, Fry Boulevard, Sierra Vista at the Centennial Pavilion. There is no admission.

Attend harvesting classes

At the Sierra Vista Farmer’s Market today, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Bisbee Farmers Market Saturday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Bisbee Farmers Market Aug. 4, 10 a.m. – 2. p.m.; join Baja Arizona Sustainable Agriculture to learn how to harvest, process and store mesquite pods in preparation for the community mesquite millings this fall. Local experts will be on hand to answer questions people may have. Also sample mesquite baked goods, purchase mesquite flour and pick up free harvesting guides and recipes. There is no charge to attend.

Join Buffalo Soldier site tour

The next guided Tour of Buffalo Soldier Historic Sites takes place Saturday. Learn about the history of Fort Huachuca and the legendary Buffalo Soldiers who fought during the Indian Wars.

Reservations are a must. Participants will meet at the Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma Street at 1 p.m. to board the van for the tour onto Fort Huachuca. Admission is $15 with children 12 and under admitted free. Current and valid identification for all over age 13 will be verified.

Veterans to be recognized

The local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1020 is presenting a free barbecue for Vietnam veterans and their spouses at the Sierra Vista Veterans’ Memorial Park on Saturday. Food will be served from noon until 3 p.m. at Pavilion #1. Bring lawn chairs.

Adults invited to Diamondbacks game

The City of Sierra Vista’s Leisure Services Department plans a trip to Chase Field as the Diamondbacks take on the Astros on Sunday for adults 18 and older. The $35 cost includes transportation and admission to the game. There will be a dinner stop at a restaurant on the way home. Bring money for food and drinks.

Vans depart from the Ethel Berger Center at 9 a.m. and return home around 9 p.m. Space is limited; register now at all Leisure Services Facilities.

Theater company plans auditions

The Illegitimate Theater Company, Inc. will conduct auditions for their upcoming fall production of Joseph Kesselring’s “Arsenic and Old Lace.” Auditions will be held at Murr Community Center, Fort Huachuca on Tuesday, Wednesday, July 26, 28 and 30. All auditions will be at 6 p.m. except for the 28th which will be at 2 p.m. The show requires 11 males and 3 females.

Youth Fun Day set

A free Youth Fun Day will be held at Bisbee’s Warren Ballpark July 28, from 3 – 9 p.m. Organizations that would like to sponsor a youth-friendly activity or entertainment are invited to participate. There is no cost.

Food vendor spaces are available for $25.

Run around the park

The City’s Leisure & Library Services invites the public to the summer 5K Run Around the Park, July 28 at 7 a.m. The cost for the race is $15 per person and will increase to $20 the day of the race. A $1 discount will be given to members of the Thunder Mountain Running Club.

Runners who pre-register will receive a race T-shirt. First, second and third place individual awards will be presented in eight male and female age divisions. The race starts and ends in the parking lot at Apache Middle School. Register at The Cove, Oscar Yrun Community Center or Ethel Berger Center.

Garlic festival announced

Triangle T Historic Guest Ranch will host the 3rd Annual Garlic Festival, July 28 – 29 at 4190 Dragoon Rd., Dragoon.

There will be a farmers market, face painting, magic demonstrations, old west re-enactments, live music, cooking contest and garlic cooking demonstrations

Observe Hummingbird banding

Join other observers at hummingbird banding sessions on Fort Huachuca, scheduled for one-half-hour after sunrise until approximately 10 a.m. Banding takes place at the Public Affairs Office, across from the gazebo on Brown Parade Field. The next session is July 29.

Learn to ‘bird by ear’

Learn about “Birding By Ear” July 29, 1:30 p.m. at the Carr House Visitor Information Center. Rick Romea, expert birder, will help the audience to develop a common language to describe bird vocalizations, using examples from common southwest birds. Learn to characterize bird sounds as to common types and sound qualities. The free presentation takes place at the Carr House, Carr Canyon Road.

Improve public speaking

Those interested in improving public speaking and leadership skills should consider visiting the Huachuca Toastmasters — a non-profit chapter of Toastmasters International, and recent recipient of the Select Distinguished Toastmasters Club award. Meetings convene at 11:30 a.m. and adjourn at 12:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the corner of Christy and Adair on Fort Huachuca.
