Attend harvesting classes

At the Bisbee Farmers Market Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2. p.m., join Baja Arizona Sustainable Agriculture to learn how to harvest, process and store mesquite pods in preparation for the community mesquite millings this fall. Local experts will be on hand to answer questions people may have. Also sample mesquite baked goods, purchase mesquite flour and pick up free harvesting guides and recipes. There is no charge to attend.

Get school backpacks blessed

Families are invited to attend Community/Backpack Sunday hosted by Sierra Evangelical Lutheran Church, 101 N. Lenzner, Sierra Vista.

On Sunday, at their 8 and 10:30 a.m. church services, there will be a blessing of the backpacks. Students and teachers should bring backpacks to the services to celebrate the beginning of a new school year with prayer, games and food.

Activities begin at 9:15 a.m., and include games and a continental breakfast. There will be tricycle races, face painting, Bible trivia and a scavenger hunt for school supplies. Approximately 215 backpacks filled with school supplies will be given to local schools that identify children in need.

Annual Tombstone Vigilante Days

Tombstone will be celebrating their Annual Vigilante Days Aug. 10 – 12 on Historic Allen Street.

The Tombstone Vigilantes, the oldest performing gunfighting reenactment group in Arizona, will perform various gunfighting skits all weekend along with several out-of-town groups.

The Vigilante Days Chili Cook Off will take place on Saturday, and the Annual 10K run will take place on Sunday.

Observe Hummingbird banding

Join other observers at hummingbird banding sessions on Fort Huachuca, scheduled for one-half-hour after sunrise until approximately 10 a.m. Banding takes place at the Public Affairs Office, across from the gazebo on Brown Parade Field. The next session will be held on Aug. 12.

Learn about area history

Mike Foster, local videographer, created the first videos in the San Pedro River Natural Conservation Area  Natural and Cultural History Series in 2004. This local series has now expanded to include over 50 videos. Foster will present the most recent video, “Hydrology of the San Pedro River, Arizona” and discuss this new theme as well as the rest of the series on Aug. 12, 1:30 p.m. The free presentation takes place at the Carr House, Carr Canyon Road.

Diamondbacks offer military discounts

The Arizona Diamondbacks extend a 50-percent discount to all members of the armed forces and military veterans for every Sunday home game in the 2012 season.

Games include:

  • Aug. 12: D-backs vs. Washington Nationals
  • Aug. 26: D-backs vs. San Diego Padres
  • Sept. 16: D-backs vs. San Francisco Giants
  • Sept. 30: D-backs vs. Chicago Cubs

Local youth orchestra seeks members

The Cochise County Youth Orchestra seeks violin, viola, cello and string bass players to for its new season which runs Aug. 14 – Dec. 11. Students from elementary to high school age who have at least one year of playing experience and are currently taking private lessons, or who pass an audition, are eligible to join. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at Calvary’s Rock Church, 231 N. Canyon Drive, Sierra Vista.

Tuition for the regular orchestra is $105 for the entire semester. Tuition for the beginner program, new this year, is $50 for the semester.

FHCSC announces kick-off luncheon

Join the Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club for the first luncheon of the 2012-2013 year on Aug. 15,, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Mountain Vista Community Center on Meyer Dr. FHCSC is open to all ranks, any gender. Enjoy lunch, bingo and learn about the events FHCSC has planned for this year.

Improve public speaking

Those interested in improving public speaking and leadership skills should consider visiting the Huachuca Toastmasters — a non-profit chapter of Toastmasters International, and recent recipient of the Select Distinguished Toastmasters Club award. Meetings convene at 11:30 a.m. and adjourn at 12:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the corner of Christy and Adair on Fort Huachuca.

Adopt a shelter animal

If planning to add a pet to the family, consider adopting one from the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Facility or a rescue group rather than from another source, suggests the Cochise County Humane Society. This will help give unwanted animals a new home and reduce the number of animals produced through puppy mills.

CANTER seeks volunteers

Horse lovers who have a morning each week to volunteer are invited to join CANTER, which needs horse handlers and side walkers to support their therapeutic riding program for children and adults with disabilities. CANTER operates Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 7388 Chief Joseph Dr. off Moson Road, Hereford.
