FH alcohol offenses on the decline

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Army Substance Abuse Program, or ASAP, staff has been reviewing the high risk behavior data for the current year. Currently there has been a steady decline over each quarter with detection of alcohol offenses amongst Soldiers. For the first through third quarter there have been 24, 19, and 16 offenses reported to the Fort Huachuca ASAP respectively. This decline, over the first nine months of the fiscal year, is due to a collection of factors working together. It is the culmination of the service providers and the community members working to deglamorize alcohol abuse. ASAP officials here want to call on the community, and the agencies that support it, to keep up the good work. A decline in alcohol abuse will impact several other high risk behaviors.

One of the effects of alcohol is it lowers inhibitions and allows the user to relax. Alcohol abuse allows users to relax to the point of not considering the consequences of their behavior which could lead to legal, financial, relationship, employment or health problems. For example, if a person receives a ticket for driving under the influence, he or she is impacted legally which in turn will require financial restitution to several sources. This can create monetary problems in the home bringing more stress to the alcohol abuser and to those who are bystanders. One night of fun can lead to months of unplanned stressors.

Continue to look out for one another. Those who suspect that someone has substance abuse problems should contact ASAP, 533-2071. If ASAP personnel are not able to help the individual directly, they will ensure he or she is directed to the appropriate agency that can provide assistance.
