Gunfighter’s rendevous planned

Gunfighting groups will compete for honors as being the “best” gunfighting group at Tombstone’s Annual Rendezvous of the Gunfighters, Saturday — Monday. All competition takes place at the “O.K. Corral” located on Allen Street. Scheduled to appear for this year’s event is Old West Thunder from El Paso, Texas, the Arizona Gunfighters of Mesa and the Tombstone Wild Bunch.

On Saturday, the first “Couples” Costume Competition will take place on Allen Street outside the O.K. Corral. Two couples will be chosen by audience applause for a $100 cash prize. On Sunday, the Annual Costume Parade will take place at noon starting at 6th and Allen and proceed to 4th and Allen.

Homework help for students

Students in grades K-12 as well as college students can visit www.SierraVistaAZ.gov/svlibrary to get on-demand, free homework help from qualified tutors. Help is available in math, science, social studies and English. Spanish-speaking tutors are also available to help students in math and science.

See old fashioned rodeo

The Sonoita Labor Day Rodeo takes place Saturday – Monday, at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Gates open daily at 12:30 p.m. Admission price is $10 for adults and $5 for youth.

Folklore preserve reopens

The Arizona Folklore Preserve announces announce its schedule of performances for part of the 2012-2013 season:

Saturday/Sunday — Dolan Ellis

Sept. 8/9 — Michael Grande

Sept. 15/16 — Ted Ramirez

Sept. 22/23 — Red Hot Rhythm Rustlers

Sept. 29/30 — TBA

All performances start at 2 p.m.

Go 6 miles south of Sierra Vista on State Route 92 to Ramsey Canyon Road. Turn right (west), drive 3.3 miles, and watch for the AFP sign and entrance on the left.

Celebrate National Cheese Pizza Day

Mountain Vista Communities will celebrate National Cheese Pizza Day with a superhero theme on Wednesday, 5 p.m. at. MVC Community Center, 102 Davis. Join MVC for free cheese pizza and goodie bags. Make a superhero mask. Wear your favorite superhero gear to be entered to win a prize!

Open to all MVC residents. Space is limited.

PFLAG Sierra Vista chapter meets

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays welcomes parents, families and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Members provide support and information to counter myths and misinformation about sexual orientation and gender identity.

Monthly meetings take place at 6:30 p.m., the first Wednesday of each month, at the Unitarian Universalist Church office, 1020 E. Fry Blvd., just west of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The group will meet on Wednesday.

Dine under the stars

The University of Arizona’s South Foundation, Inc. will hold a “Dine Under the Stars” dinner, Sept. 8, at the U of A South campus, featuring a buffet with a Latin theme. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. in the grassy area at the campus center.

U of A South is located on N, Columbo Ave., Sierra Vista.

Voter registration drive set

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s voter registration drive will take place Sept. 8, 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma St.

Diamondbacks’ military discounts

The Arizona Diamondbacks extend a 50-percent discount to all members of the armed forces and military veterans for every Sunday home game in the 2012 season.

Sept. 30 – D-backs vs. Chicago Cubs
