Homework help for students

Students in grades K-12 as well as college students can visit www.SierraVista-AZ.gov/svlibrary to get on-demand, free homework help from qualified tutors.

Help is available in math, science, social studies and English. Spanish-speaking tutors are also available to help students in math and science.

Holiday Bazaar vendors sought

Space is limited. Only a few more vendor booth spaces remain for the 2012 Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club Holiday Bazaar. Artists, crafters or sellers of unique gift items can go to www.fthuachucaspouses.com for more information or an application.

 

Voter registration drive set

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s voter registration drive will take place Saturday, 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma St.  For more information or to learn what to bring, call 459.2392.

 

Folklore preserve reopens

The Arizona Folklore Preserve announces announce its schedule of performances for part of the 2012-2013 season:

Saturday/Sunday — Michael Grande

Sept. 15/16 — Ted Ramirez

Sept. 22/23 — Red Hot Rhythm Rustlers

Sept. 29/30 — TBA

All performances start at 2 p.m.

Dine under the stars

The University of Arizona’s South Foundation, Inc. will hold a “Dine Under the Stars” dinner, Saturday, at the U of A South campus, featuring a buffet with a Latin theme. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. in the grassy area at the campus center.

Enjoy festival, entertainment in Tucson

On Saturday, 6 p.m., Southwest Soul Circuit will showcase its’ Shining Star Artists series at 2nd Saturdays Downtown Festival in La Placita Village Plaza at the corner of Church and Broadway in Tucson.  NewTang Family AcroYoga group and Mr. Falsetto, Justin B. Celebrate Fort Bowie’s 150th anniversary

Special events this month are part of Fort Bowie’s 150th Anniversary celebration.  Ranger-led easy hikes into the national historic site on Sunday and Sept. 23 begin at 10 a.m. at the Fort Bowie trailhead on Apache Pass. The hikes will focus primarily on the chronology of events that led to the establishment of the fort. To get to Fort Bowie from Sierra Vista, take State Route 90 north to Benson and then head east on Interstate 10. Get off at exit 362 at Bowie and then follow Apache Pass road out to the Fort Bowie parking lot. It is about a 1.5-mile hike to the fort ruins from the parking lot.

Observe hummingbird banding

Join other observers at hummingbird banding sessions on Fort Huachuca, scheduled for one-half-hour after sunrise until approximately 10 a.m. Banding takes place at the Public Affairs Office, across from the gazebo on Brown Parade Field.  The next session will be held on Sunday.

Learn about Chiricahua Apache

Learn about “The Chiricahua Apaches in Myth and History” presented by Rebecca Orozco, History Professor at Cochise College. Sunday, 1:30 p.m. at the Carr House Visitor Information Center, Coronado National Forest, Carr Canyon Road.  This presentation contains a collection of historic photos from the late 1800s from the end of an era and the history of the conflict between the U.S. Government and the last Native American group to surrender.

The next meeting of the Fort Huachuca Community Spouses Club will be on Sept. 19, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain Activity Center on Irwin Drive.  FHCSC is open to all ranks, any gender.  This month’s theme is Oktoberfest!
