Buena Band concert tonight

The Buena Show Band will hold a concert tonight at 7 p.m. in the Buena Performing Arts Center, Buena High School, 5225 Buena School Blvd., Sierra Vista. This year’s musical theme is “It’s All about the Swing.” Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.

Bisbee Blues Festival Saturday

The Bisbee Blues Festival takes place in Warren Ballpark in Lowell Saturday, noon – 10 p.m. Show starts at 1 p.m. All times are approximate.

  • 1 p.m. – Leon J
  • 1:45 p.m. – Sean Trackman & The Copper City Rail
  • 3 p.m. – Bad News Blues Band
  • 4:30 p.m. – Eddie Turner and The Trouble Twins
  • 6:30 p.m. – Diunna Greenleaf

Winter Garden Workshop Sunday

The Struse family will host a free one-hour Winter Garden Workshop on Sunday, 9 a.m. in their garden at 8152 S. Hope Place, Hereford. Learn how to prepare the ground for planting, install and use drip tape and plan methods for conserving water. Holiday Bazaar vendors sought

Space is limited. Only a few more vendor booth spaces remain for the 2012 Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club Holiday Bazaar. Artists, crafters or sellers of unique gift items can go to www.fthuachucaspouses.com for more information or an application.

Folklore preserve reopens

The Arizona Folklore Preserve announces announce its schedule of performances for part of the 2012-2013 season:

  • Saturday/Sunday – Ted Ramirez
  • Sept. 22/23 – Red Hot Rhythm Rustlers
  • Sept. 29/30 – TBA

All performances start at 2 p.m.

Admission is $15 for adults and $6 for children 17 and under. To make reservations, go to www.arizonafolklore.com, or call 378.6165.

Go 6 miles south of Sierra Vista on State Route 92 to Ramsey Canyon Road. Turn right (west), drive 3.3 miles, and watch for the AFP sign and entrance on the left.

Star party planned

Join the Kartchner Caverns State Park staff on Saturday for a star night party and observe the wonders of the night sky through astronomers’ telescopes. There will be solar viewing from 1 – 4 p.m., followed by an evening program in the Discovery Center at 5:30 p.m. on “Archaeoastronomy in the American Southwest: A Brief Overview.” Next, observe distant star clusters and galaxies through astronomers’ telescopes. Bring a lawn chair, light sweater and red light.

Diamondbacks’ military discounts

The Arizona Diamondbacks extend a 50-percent discount to all members of the armed forces and military veterans for every Sunday home game in the 2012 season.

Games include:

  • Sunday – D-backs vs. San Francisco Giants
  • Sept. 30 – D-backs vs. Chicago Cubs

Become a volunteer tutor

The Sierra Vista United Methodist Church will begin its 19th year of offering free tutoring to students of Huachuca Mountain Elementary School. Tutors and children in grades 1-6 meet once a week.

Since Helping Hands can only serve as many students as there are volunteers, any person interested in serving as a volunteer tutor should call 803.8984 or 378.3352. There will be an orientation in the church Fellowship Hall on Tuesday, 2 – 3 p.m.; actual tutoring begins Sept. 25, 2:15 – 3:45 p.m. and runs every Tuesday school is in session.

Because SVUMC practices a Safe Sanctuary program, all persons who work with children will be fingerprinted.

FHCSC to hold luncheon

The next meeting of the Fort Huachuca Community Spouses Club will be on Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain Activity Center on Irwin Drive. FHCSC is open to all ranks, any gender. This month’s theme is Oktoberfest!

My-Oh-My Apple Pie tour

Join Sierra Vista’s Parks and Leisure Services for a My-Oh-My Apple Pie Weekend and country fair at Apple Annie’s in Willcox, Sept. 22. The tour departs at 7:30 a.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m. from the Ether Berger Center.
