Colonel Smith Middle School

On Sept. 12, cowboy poet David Walker visited Colonel Smith Middle School. He brought a variety of items cowboys wear and use. Students learned about the importance of essential items in the cowboy wardrobe including the bandana, the straw hat and chaps. He also showed students rope, a branding iron, spurs and a saddle. Walker spoke about the origins of cowboy poetry and the components of a good poem. He inspired students to write their own poems and enter them in the up-coming contest.

In art, third graders are learning how to follow guided drawing steps in order to draw Betty the Bird, Leo the Lion, Paul the Parrot and a horse. They will put their animals into habitats of their choosing.

Fourth graders are learning about abstract art. They drew an abstract design in the art room and then later worked in the computer lab to create computer-generated art. Both abstract designs were created using the same steps and directions, but they all look wonderfully different. All computer art is on display in the hallway windows near the art room. Come by and take a look.

Fifth graders are trying to copy a Henri Matisse painting, “The Goldfish Bowl.” They are adding creative details to make the picture their own. They are also working on their own version of The “Scream,” a painting by Edvard Munch. They’ve added a dialog text bubble in which their figure describes what he or she is looking at to make them so afraid.
