Herschel Walker to visit, speak here today

Scout reports

Sports legend Herschel Walker will speak about the importance of asking for help with behavioral health and substance abuse issues at 1:45 p.m., today, at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre here. His presentation is free and open to the public.

Walker believes that treatment begins when a service member asks for help. Mental illness and substance abuse disorders continue to carry a stigma in society but especially in the military community that is expected to be independent and tough. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but many warriors fear the stigma of doing so. Walker visits military installations to share his personal story and experience with mental illness while delivering an important message to the troops, “There is no shame in asking for help, I did.” He has shared his message with more than 15,000 service members and Families.

After his presentation, Walker will sign autographs. Photos will be available and attendees are welcome to bring memorabilia, but autographs will be limited to two per person so everyone gets a chance to get an autograph.
