Sesame Street comes to Fort Huachuca

The Sesame Street characters are consoling their friend Katie about her impending move to a new military installation.

On Sept. 13 and Friday Fort Huachuca was the 46th out of 70 2012 stops for the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families. There were four performances for military Families at Barnes Field House. The show featured Sesame Street favorites including Elmo, Rosita, Grover and Cookie Monster. This year, the cast introduced the audience to their friend, Katie, the newest character of the USO tour, a 6-year-old girl who lives in a military family. She was introduced to the USO family at the start of the tour in April 2011 by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden.

Elmo let the audience know that usually Katie is a very happy little girl, but upon her introduction Katie appeared sad and unhappy.

She told Elmo that she just learned her family has to move again, and it seems that every time they get settled her military family has to move.

Throughout the performance, her Sesame friends show her that there are many ways to stay in contact with her friends and that they can remain friends no matter where in the world they are.

The show ends on the note that change is not necessarily a bad thing. Often it provides new opportunities and new friends.

By means of this show, the USO hopes to reach as many children as possible and spread their message of resilience and hope.

Since their beginnings in July 2008 the USO/ Sesame Street tour has performed 433 shows on 131 military bases in 33 states and 11 countries. They have touched many military families and have put smiles up on the faces of many youth.
