Vote absentee this week

Absentee Voting Week runs today through Oct 4. Please return your voted ballot immediately upon receiving it or submit the back-up Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot.

For assistance in completing an FWAB see your unit voting assistance officer or go to the installation voter assistance office located in Whitside Hall.

Ditch bank stabilization project

On Monday, the Directorate of Public Works began work on the Hatfield Street Ditch Bank Stabilization project located east of Weinstein Village along the north side of Hatfield Street. This project includes placing gabion baskets in the ditch along the roadside bank and large rocks in the channel. The work is expected to be completed by Oct. 31. The plan is to minimize the effect of construction on the roadway and/or traffic.

Motorists are cautioned to be vigilant in the construction area.

Ribbon cutting ceremony announced

Mountain Vista Communities and Michaels Military Housing announce the opening of Fort Huachuca’s newest neighborhood, Signal Village. Join them for their ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, 9 a.m. at 128 Carlson Loop. Reception and refreshments following the ceremony, which is open to the public. Mission Command Center of Excellence launched the new webpage for Doctrine 2015 that features all of the new Army doctrine publications and Army doctrine reference publications at http://usacac.army.mil/cac2/MCCOE/Doctrine2015Tables.asp.

SV Social Security office closes

Due to budget cuts, the Social Security Administration will no longer offer a satellite location in Sierra Vista effective Oct. 18. Residents will have access to online services at www.SocialSecurity.gov or can travel to either Douglas or Tucson for services.

Commissary case-lot sale set

The Commissary will hold a case-lot sale Friday – Sunday in the north warehouse in the main store during normal business hours. Case lot items wil- be available at reduced prices.

Pre-transition/separation briefing location changes

Effective Wednesday, the Pre-transition/Separation briefing will be held at 9.a.m. in Building 41421, and units should adjust schedules accordingly. Soldiers who have difficulty walking up stairs should be identified in advance so accommodation arrangements can be made.

FH, SV host Prescription Take-Back Day

The first-ever Prescription Drug Take-Bake Day on Fort Huachuca is Saturday at the PX parking lot, near Cochise Theater. Law enforcement will be present from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to collect and dispose of unused/unwanted and expired prescription drugs. The U.S. Army, Pharmacy Services at Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center, and Directorate of Emergency Services, Fort Huachuca, are partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration to support this event.

The DEA and the Sierra Vista Police Department have scheduled a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Ace Hardware parking lot, 3756 E. Fry Blvd.

This is an opportunity for those who have accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs to safely dispose of those medications.

Prescription drugs accepted are pills and capsules.

Items that will not be accepted include inhalers, needles, syringes and glass bottles.

SR90 replacement bridge work to begin

Replacement of the State Route 90 bridge over the San Pedro River will begin on Monday.

The $7 million project to replace the 57-year-old bridge is scheduled to be completed in 18 months, with a six-month construction shutdown from April 1, 2013 until Oct. 1, 2013 to avoid disturbing the nesting season of migratory birds in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.

During each of the six-month construction periods from October through March, motorists on SR 90 will share a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

During construction, pedestrians will not be permitted to cross the bridge for safety reasons and bicyclists should avoid using the bridge. Also, the hiking trail that originates at the nearby San Pedro House and passes beneath the SR 90 bridge will be closed during construction. Other trails in the area will not be affected.

Heating equipment changeover set

The Directorate of Public Works has planned the changeover to heating equipment from Monday – Oct. 22. Representatives from facilities that have not been completed by Oct. 22 should call the contractor’s work control section, 533.5457 or 533.5459 for assistance. Additionally, callbacks for heaters that have been turned on should be referred to work control until Oct. 29. After that date, service orders should be placed with the DPW service order desk 533.3151/2003. In most facilities, this changeover requires the cooler to be disconnected before the heating unit can be activated.

JITC responsibility to change

The Joint Interoperability Test Command will hold a change of responsibility and retirement ceremony for Sgt. Major Cary Marshall on Oct. 4, 10 a.m. at the JITC Facility, Building 57305, in Conference Room 2. Accepting responsibility as the senior enlisted advisor of JITC is Sgt. Major Lewis Brown.

Retiree Council meeting location change

Due to ongoing renovations of the Directorate of Human Resources conference room, the Fort Huachuca Retiree Council will temporarily change both its meeting time and place. From October through January, the RC will meet in the Army Community Service Building #50010, near the Whitside Hall traffic circle. Meeting hours are 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. The next RC meeting is Oct. 12.

Installation retirement ceremony set

Fort Huachuca officials will conduct an installation retirement ceremony on Oct. 19, 4 p.m. on Brown Parade Field to publicly recognize and thank Soldiers, civilian retirees, and Family members for their service to Fort Huachuca, the United States military and the Nation. The public is invited.

Retiring military and civilians who wish to participate must notify the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security by Monday at 533.2294.

Disability information fair planned

Fort Huachuca will hold the Second Annual Army Community Service Exceptional Family Member Program Disability Employment Awareness Month Information Fair Oct. 12 at Murr Community Center, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Representatives from multiple agencies will be available to provide resource information for attendees.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

Those who have an exceptional Family member, plan to transition from the military within the next 12 months, are pending a medical board or medical separation, or need information about disability services, employment resources, local, state and federal programs should try to attend.

Walk-in well-woman exams offered

Well-woman exams are performed on a walk-in basis from 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month in the main Health Center, Family Care Clinic A. Appointments can be scheduled at any other time by calling 533.9200.
